From the Principal

With only 4 weeks of term to go, I can not believe how fast the year is going. Tomorrow being the official first day of Winter, the mornings are cooler and the days are shorter. I know I am enjoying the indoor warmth of my house.

I would like to let families know that we have a high number of students away from school at the moment with various cold, flu and COVID like symptoms, such as fevers, chills, coughs, sore throats and runny noses. We hope these students are feeling well soon, and would like to remind families that if your child exhibits any of these symptoms, they are asked to stay home, rest and recover. We are required to send home any child who presents with these symptoms (unless linked to other diagnosed medical conditions), as part of the DET COVIDSafe measures. We will continue to keep families informed about COVID positive exposures through our email system.

Last Wednesday, our staff took part in a full day of professional learning, beginning the process of looking at best practise when teaching Reading, and the links it has to writing and oral language development. You may have seen several news articles lately, both on TV and in newspapers, around the explicit teaching of oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension, and how there is a lot of research of the benefits of these in primary school education. As a school, we are looking at our current teaching practices and some changes we need to make to best teach all our students to understand phonics, reading, writing and language development. You will hear more about this as the year progresses in the newsletter and from your child's classroom teacher.

Yesterday and today, I have been in Melbourne at the annual State Principals' Forum. This forum happens every year, and all principals across the state are invited to attend. It has been an interesting conference where I have attended different sessions on student and staff wellbeing, improving student learning outcomes and assessments. It has been wonderful to meet face to face again other principals.

Friday June 10th is our second approved curriculum day for this term. We have aligned this day with the secondary college to try to make things a little easier for families. Teachers will all be attending professional learning on this day.
