Last week we had a collection of universities, TAFE institutes and independent tertiary colleges visit our College to help students prepare for future careers. The information provided by the Tertiary Information Service focuses on VTAC and transitioning to tertiary education after high school. Students could ask questions of tertiary representatives at the expo component.
The information received was good for learning about how to apply for university. I found out about scholarships and what to do if you do not receive the ATAR you are aiming for, you can also apply for special consideration - Sophie Hoxley.
Gillicks bus lines have kindly sponsored the 22 seater bus for the students competing at the Sale Field and Game clay target competition in June. Adrian Cousins, has also kindly sponsored the squads attending the event by donating the subscription for the day, he is also coaching our young shooters on a regular basis.
A big thanks to the Bairnsdale Clay Target Club for their ongoing support of a regular Tuesday afternoon practice session, also all the people that volunteer their time to help set up and support on these days, it is great to see.
On Tuesday 17th, Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th May the Gippsland Tech School ran a three day incursion for our Year 10, 11 and 12 PE classes. A couple of lucky Year 8 and 9 classes got to join in as well. They had some amazing ‘high tech’ equipment they bought with them and students participated in a range of activities included VO2 max tests, reaction timers, speed gates measuring their speed over a 10m sprint and force plates measuring the force applied while jumping.
The senior Hub would like to remind students and families/carer of the below approved absences and the required documentation that students need to provide to maintain the required 90% VCAL/VCE approved attendance. Please refer to the BSC VCE and VCAL Assessment Policy below for more information
Given the importance of attendance at school, we encourage students and parents/carers to monitor attendance on Compass and to contact the College to ensure all approved absences are properly recorded.
VCE/VCAL Approved absences:
We have been lucky to have many guest speakers this week to our College including Victoria Police, Bairnsdale Regional Health Service - physio, radiographer, nurse and HR - people and culture, explaining all the career pathways available to the students. The Rural Youth Network - Youth connection/community also had information available. The guest speakers were very informative and students asked lots of questions.
VCAL Amazing Burger Lunch for staff
On Wednesday staff were able to purchase an amazing lunch including a burger, slice and drink. Thank you to the VCAL students especially Tayla Gollan.
Year 11 VCE Food Studies
VCE Environmental Science
Environmental science students attended East Gippsland Water waste water treatment plant last week. We learned about the process and treatment of waste water. We also learned about sustainable practices with water including use of the methane gas to power the operation.
It’s a fascinating place.
The photos below show Year 12 Environmental science students working in the lab on a 'Detection of Coliform bacteria' practical. We tested the waste water around the school for bacteria by incubating them over 72 hours.
Year 10 Evolve and Perish
Year 10 Evolve or Perish students demonstrated their understanding of human evolution by creating a poster and summary table.
Thursday May 5th and Friday May 6th our Year 10 outdoor Ed class went on a hiking trip to Mt Erica.
On the first day we did about 7km up hill. On the way up there we stopped at Mushroom Rocks for a break and climbed the rocks. It was a great view. As we hiked on, it started snowing. Our next stop was Talbot Hut Ruins where we were staying that night. We set up camp and went for a walk to Baw Baw Plateau to collect some firewood. As we were walking back it started snowing again and got heavier and heavier. When we got back, we decided to have a snowball fight- it was fun until our hands got cold and couldn’t feel them. That night everyone was freezing, no one could really sleep because it was -5 degrees.
The next day we hiked about 7km and back to Mushroom Rocks and down back to the car. There was a lot of people falling over but still getting back up and walking again. We drove into Walhalla to have a look/walk around, we did about 3km of walking in Walhalla. We stopped in Rawson and saw a koala in a tree! Than we stopped for lunch at Toongabbie. Overall it was a really fun and cold experience for us all.

Have you ever had a piece of hair in your food? Well that person wouldn’t have gotten their Safe Food Handling certificate!
During week 3 VCAL students had the pleasure of participating in several courses and gained many certificates. Barista, First Aid, waiting tables and Responsible Serving of Alcohol, and safe food handling were among the skills the students learnt.
In the barista course students were given the opportunity to use the coffee machine, frothing milk and extracting coffee carefully, it was an art form. The VCAL teachers were more than happy to give the coffee’s a taste. The purpose of job camp was to help students gain special skills to get qualifications for jobs in town. Look out Mr. D’s VCALs coming to get ya!
Students who didn’t participate got busy in the hospitality room cooking up a storm, soup, quiches, slice, and donut balls were some of the great things being made.

I lived in Marlo during primary school, which is where I first got involved in the Marlo triathlon kid’s tri. Around 2016, I joined the East Gippsland Water Dragons swim club, which greatly improved my technique and confidence. This allowed me to compete in longer races once I met the age requirement.
In 2018 I did my first fun tri in the Marlo triathlon. I won the female under 18 category and was second female overall, winning the ‘local hero’ award. It was the first milestone in my triathlon journey.
After moving to Bairnsdale, I joined Riviera Triathlon Club and regularly participated in the ‘mini tri’ which is held in the BARC and around the BSC swamp. A few years later, I did my first bigger race as a part of the 2XU triathlon series in Melbourne. In the following season I did the whole series, along with my dad who travelled and competed with me. With events in St Kilda, Brighton, Sandringham, and Elwood, it was a big effort, but the races gained a lot of popularity and even stuck it out through the Covid pandemic, so it was worth it.
Last year I finished my first Olympic distance triathlon (1.5km swim, 40km cycle, 10km run) in Melbourne which was also a part of the 2XU series. Competing in the series won me both 2XU series points and Victorian State Series points. By finishing every race in the series (and finishing on the podium a couple times), I collected enough points to be named Victoria’s 12-15 age group state series champion.
This year I did the whole series again, only now some of the events are age group National Championship races. I placed second in the 15-19 age group of one of the National Championships races which I later found qualified me (along with my dad) for the ITU Age Group Triathlon World Championships. I’ve had so much help along the way, including from Frank McShane and his daughter Charlotte (professional triathlete and BSC alumni), and TAG coach Kate Bramley. On the 24th of November 2022 I’ll get to wear green and gold for a 400m swim, 10km cycle and 2.5km run (a super-sprint triathlon) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. 😊
