Studio Art Excursion

Gallery visits build understanding of the art industry

Further embracing the fact that restrictions have lifted, it has been wonderful for Year 12 Students to witness art in person again. As part of the Studio Art syllabus focusing on the art industry and gallery types, students were able to visit the three types of galleries; public, private and artist run.

Students were inspired by the work of Danie Mellor at Tolarno Gallery, Danie's work 'redux' is at once beautiful and a calling to account. In the exhibition notes, Dr Campbell Grey wrote: 'Finely crafted, embellished and framed, with images and devices that disarm with humour, narrative and a play on the ‘exotic’, the work nonetheless confronts and confounds our understanding of the past. Mellor tells stories that are neither simple nor complete.'

The students then visited TopArts 2022 at NGV Federation Square, to hear about the works, with a lecture and an opportunity to view the folios, including last year's Year 12 finalist Mila Freeman. This experience was both enlightening and daunting with the high quality of the work on display.

Finally students took in the artist run space 'Blindside' which had an exhibition that was part of the photography festival taking place in the CBD.

Seeing work in person and gaining a greater understanding of the art industry was an invaluable experience that will benefit the students moving forward.
