From the Library
IDAHOBIT Day craft action
Students were busy during lunch time at the library celebrating and supporting IDAHOBIT Day. With the help of library staff, badges and rainbow bracelets were the order of the day.
Introducing Aidan
Hello, my name is Aidan Kenner. I am so happy to be here, making the John Cain Library everything it can be in Diana’s absence. Come say hi!
I’m a writer, sports nut and a long-time librarian who worked at Darebin Libraries for 7 years. I love the writings of Lispector, Saramago and Rulfo as well as many, many others.
Looking ahead to Reconciliation Week
John Cain Library will be celebrating National Reconciliation Week (27th of May - 3rd June). Each day we will be showing First Nations films, documentaries, and music videos at lunchtime. Everyone will also have the opportunity to write a reconciliation message, which will be displayed in the library.
During Make and Take Club on Monday 30th, we will have activities such as badge making and mindfulness colouring. The colouring pages have been designed by Aboriginal artists and feature Victorian Indigenous words from the Woiwurrung, Taungurung and Yorta Yorta languages.
Come along to learn, share, create understanding and celebrate First Nations culture and history, and together we can take steps forward towards reconciliation.

Fifteen shortlisted writers will also be invited to participate in a writing masterclass and attend an exclusive Q&A with Prize Mentor Zana Fraillon, as well as receive a book pack of YA Titles courtesy of Hachette Australia.
Zana says:
"I am delighted to be this year’s ambassador for the Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers. I worked for many years in schools before becoming an author and working with young people to help find their voice is both a treat and honour. There is such a brilliant community of writers in Australia and welcoming a new generation into that community is an absolute joy. Phillip Pullman famously said, ‘there are some themes, some subjects, too large for adult fiction; they can only be dealt with adequately in a children’s book.’ I adore and agree wholeheartedly with this quote, but would go even further, to say that there are some themes, some subjects, too large for adults to write; they can only be dealt with adequately by a young person. I cannot wait to see the writing that emerges from the young people submitting their stories to this prize."
