Captains' Conference

NHS Captains with Darrel from HoMie

Guest speakers inspire our student captains

The Captains' conference last week featured guest speakers from two important community organisations; Nurragunnawali: Reconciliation in Education and HoMie.

Darrel from HoMie was one of the guest speakers at our captains' conference last week. HoMie is a non-profit social enterprise that has established a shop in Brunswick and has been active since 2015. The organisation makes clothing from which the profit goes towards homeless young people experiencing hard times on the street. We also learned from Darrell about the pathway program HoMie offers to people, and how our community can be a part of the enterprise as well as help support this organisation.

We would like to thank Darrell for coming to school and educating us on this topic, and he hope to use our knowledge to further improve our community.

Apart from our talented guest speakers that were the highlight of our captains' conference, we also had the opportunity to regroup with other fellow captains and reflect as well as build goals for upcoming events for our Northcote High School students and the community. Some of which include, our schools Reconciliation Action Plan, bake sales, sausage sizzles, formals and our VCE De-stress day.

Esme from Narragunnawali: Reconciliation in Education was our second guest speaker. Our group were given the ideas and tools to create a Reconciliation Action Plan for the school. The Reconciliation Action Plan is a foundation from which to build a relationship between our school and Aboriginal culture and history. Events will be planned for Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June), as well as permanent installations of Aboriginal appreciation. School captains also spent the day discussing plans to integrate student opinions of the school, first aid courses for students, fundraisers, social events, art installations, sport competitions, and more.
