S A K Garden

What's happening in the PATCH?!

The children continue to enjoy garden, with so much wonderment and awe. We are currently emptying out a bed using our large muscles to move dirt from one to another. Once the bed has been emptied, it will be pulled apart and rebuilt as a wicking bed. Wicking beds have a constant supply of water in their base. I am currently applying for a grant to cover the cost of the materials to rebuild all of the large beds.

As you can see, wicking beds are lined with heavy duty plastic, a layer of sand and a hose connected to a PVC pipe is put in place along with an overflow hose. This is then all covered with a layer of scoria, shade cloth and then filled with soil ready for planting. Wicking beds are a great way of saving water as there is little evaporation therefore we do not need to water as often. The idea behind this is that not all plants like water on their leaves as it can cause fungi/disease.

Harvest

We have just finished our harvest of zuchinni and eggplant. We continue to harvest salad leaves, herbs, capsicum, spring onions, tomatoes, and cucumber.

Last week was our first harvest of potatoes. The children were excited to dig up 3kg of purple congo potatoes and we will wait to see what other varieties we have as we dig them out. We will start our harvest of corn for this menu also.

Thank you for your continued support at our market stall, by purchasing our excess produce.
