Library Corner

Welcome to Term 2 and the challenges of learning and working in a remote environment. Education Support staff have been busy putting new procedures in place and supporting both teaching staff and families. Here in the Library we have been continuing to support the information, learning and reading needs of both students and staff. We are pleased to announce that both our ClickView video streaming service and the Library Management System (Accessit) are now cloud-based. This has enabled library staff to perform their work more efficiently within a remote learning platform.

Please navigate to the new Library Catalogue URL and bookmark it in your favourite internet browser:

Students will gain access to the College’s collections of databases, ebooks, audiobooks, handy websites and more.  Links to login details for databases and instructions for downloading ebooks are included. This month’s handy new addition - Mrs Gatt has catalogued a selection of websites under the heading “Virtual excursions”. Check them out today!

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge kicked off last term and one student has already completed the Challenge while many others have commenced. Students will find details on the Library Catalogue and in an email sent to students at the end of Term 1. Keen students are invited to email Ms Michael for their username and passcode.

Book Club has moved online - to Google Classroom - and students have been invited to participate in book discussions, reviews and in the enjoyment of reading both print and ebooks. A selection of “boredom buster” activities includes this month's feature - Australian author Jack Heath’s YouTube channel. Watch Jack read aloud from his latest YA adventure series (ages 10+) or accept his writing  challenges. Fun for the whole family!

Harshitha (8B) reviewed My Basmati Bat Mitzvah and gave it a solid 4 star rating - a perfect read for YA aged between 12-14 years.

Students interested in joining Book Club classroom can email Ms Michael for an invitation. We are also seeking book reviews and short news items from our wonderful team of Library Monitors which will be added to the Library Catalogue dashboard page. Submissions by email to Ms Michael.

The Library collections are being enhanced with each new delivery from our suppliers. Bestsellers and latest releases are being ordered and items sourced from overseas have been placed on hold until international freight restrictions and workplace closures have been relaxed. Books which have been requested will be available for collection once the College reopens. Mrs Gatt has notified those students by email.

In conclusion we congratulate Gauri Gupta (11B) who was selected as Library Captain 2020 from a very strong field of candidates. Gauri is a keen member of Book Club and a hard-working Library Monitor. We welcome Gauri as an ambassador for the College’s Library and express thanks to our outgoing Library Captain 2019 - Abigail Staples (12B).

Keep safe, stay well and read, read, read!
