Senior Girls Soccer
27th July: Finals Round 2-2 full time, 1-2 on penalties.
Due to their success in the Regular Season, the Senior Girls Soccer Team made it through to the knock-out phase of the competition. We faced Leeming Senior High School in an away game, in windy and at times rainy conditions. The first half started in a low key fashion, with both teams playing the first ten minutes tentatively. Leeming were the first team to allow the play to open up a little and scored the first goal of the game in a lucky rebound play. Leeming’s second goal came five minutes later, after a throw in found a loose player in the box, who slotted the ball into the bottom right hand corner. One of the best worked goals we’ve had scored against us in all fixtures. Down 2-nil the SNC team headed into the half-time break with their backs to the wall. It was hoped that a change in formation would also mean a change in our fortunes. The girls are to be commended on the way they approached the second half. Within ten minutes Latitia Bondoc had pegged one back, with a magnificent strike that evaded the Leeming keeper. Before long we had equalised, thanks to some terrific play in the midfield from Tapu, which was finished in style by Amelie. Despite having all of the play in the second half and ample shots on goal, the team could not find the net and the full time score was 2 goals all. A decision was made before the start of the game that in the event of a draw we would go straight to penalties. In a situation that mirrored the close game, it required 8 penalties to be taken, before there was a winner. Unfortunately the game did not finish in our favour and we went down 1-2 on penalties.
It has been an absolute pleasure to coach the team this season, and they are to be commended on the amazing comeback that forced their final game to a shoot-out. We will be wrapping up the season and celebrating our success with a team lunch at school- well done girls!
