Japanese Students Learn the Art of Kimono Dressing

As part of our unit on “Describing People”, Year 9 Japanese students participated in a Kimono Cultural Experience, led by Ms Rachel McAllister.

Ms McAllister generously shared her collection of vintage kimonos and showed students a very ornate Japanese wedding kimono with gold brocade and a traditional motif design. Students were very interested to see the multiple layers, footwear and split-toe “socks” that are worn with kimonos. Two students were then chosen to model the women’s and men’s wedding kimonos. Then the rest of the class chose a kimono and obi (belt) each and had a turn at dressing themselves.

At the end of the session, Ms McAllister gave each student a kami fuusen (paper balloon) as a memento of our cultural immersion. Please check out the photo gallery to see the spectacular transformation of our students.
