Year 9 Programme

Police Visit & ‘Ask a Policeman’ Session

On Tuesday 26th October, Girton’s Year 9 students enjoyed a visit from Sargeant Mark Bell of the Bendigo Police Department. This session is now a tradition within the Year 9 Programme and students thoroughly enjoy this opportunity to engage with an experienced, active police officer. This year’s session was hugely successful again, with students enjoying valuable police insights into some of the dangers in the first few years of adulthood. Conversing and hearing from a frontline policeman continues to be a really powerful way to engage our students and in getting them thinking about keeping themselves (and their friends) safe in their early years of adulthood. Again, our student’s behaviour was excellent and they are commended on their thoughtful questioning in the Q & A portion of this year's session. We thank Sergeant Bell for again being so generous with his time and in sharing his life experiences with our students and look forward to facilitating this session again in 2022.

Some of the topics covered in our ‘Ask a Policeman’ session:

  • Road Safety
  • Drug and Alcohol Awareness
  • Staying safe after dark (Nightclubs & Pubs)
  • Relationships and Consent (Including conflict and managing anti-social behaviour)
  • Online Dangers (Sexting, Bullying and the Law)
  • Careers in the Police force

Looking after Yourself (Health)

In Term 4 the Year 9 students are completing a number of health-related workshops such as First Aid and CPR and Self Defence.

The self-defence workshop is designed to provide a basic introduction to how students can protect themselves physically from harm.

In the Year 9 Programme, we believe it is important to ensure that our students can defend themselves if the need arises.
