Farewell Frau Barber

Over a period of 30 years Mrs Barber has created a Performing Arts/ German language legacy that has entertained and educated generations of Cavendish Primary School students and families.

Early on she took on the role of the German language teacher at Cavendish PS and henceforth became known as Frau Barber. She instilled in children an appreciation for German culture and country and gave them a solid start in reading, writing and speaking the German language.  Leeanne always tried to make language classes fun and worthwhile with Gummi Bear treats, making Gingerbread Houses and watching fun videos remembered by many. Every year Leeanne would attend conferences and meetings to ensure her German language teaching was relevant and interesting.

Highlights over the years have been taking children to the German Festival in Geelong and winning German poetry recital competitions. Her most ambitious event was when she took a small group of students and chaperones on a tour to Germany- definitely a trip to remember!

Music is what Leeanne will be mostly remembered for. When she introduced Marimbas into our school Leeanne lifted our talents and appreciation for percussion to new levels. I’m sure most families can attest to the wonderful sounds and rhythms that our students produced in the music room. Multiple wins at the Hamilton Eisteddfod for percussion, recorders, piano playing and even singing certainly filled our trophy case and filled hearts with pride. End of year school presentation nights will not be the same without Mrs Barber’s musical interludes. They have been a much anticipated way to showcase the dancing, singing and instrumental talents of our students.

Multiple music camps to Tasmania to join in the Marimba Mania Festival have made wonderful memories. On these camps, children joined other schools to perform in public and gain inspiration from each other. This involvement lead to performances at Salamanca Market in Hobart and at the Friend’s School Performing Arts Centre. Side trips to Port Arthur and the Cadbury Chocolate Factory always kept everyone happy.

Year after year, Mrs Barber has  provided an eclectic program for Cavendish PS. From visiting artists, creating and making music, watching stage performances, and travelling the world. Sometimes stumped by technology and keeping to budgets, Mrs Barber's priority has always been to care for, teach and inspire the students of Cavendish PS. Leeanne’s passion, knowledge and dedication to her work is undoubted. Thank you Leeanne, job well done! Enjoy your retirement.
