Happy International Year of Glass! I bet you are wondering what this even means! Well, the ICG (which stands for the International Commission of Glass) thought that glass needed to be celebrated so last year they put in an application to the United Nations in hope that 2022 could become the International Year of Glass. And guess what? The United Nations said yes! The ICG want us to celebrate the many roles that glass plays in our lives from phone screens to optical fibre to glassware in labs. They also hope to educate us on how glass can play a part in our sustainable future. Considering that 2022 is the International Year of Glass, it’s not surprising that the National Science Week theme for 2022 will be ‘Glass: More than meets the eye’. Along with our topics of Biological Science, Chemical Science, Physical Science and Earth and Space Science, we will be exploring throughout the year to celebrate.

Over the course of the year there will be numerous glass themed science challenges featured in the newsletter for students to complete at home if they wish. This is a great way for students to embrace the role science plays within their everyday lives as well as being a fun and engaging way to involve the family in the learning process.

The first challenge aims to show students just how many household items are made with or from glass. We use glass every day and we often don’t even think about it. When looking around my own house, I found so many items made from glass and I was quite blown away by just how many glass items I have and rely on each and every day.

Here is your first (optional) Science Challenge for the year! I can’t wait to see how many glass items you can all find. I bet it’s more than you expect.
