Spectacular 5/6
Grade 5/6
Term 1 Week 4 2021 - Friday 23rd of February 2022
Message from the Teacher:
It has been a crazy couple of weeks, full of leadership speeches, classroom activities, running laps and hockey incursions! It was also great to see a lot of my students’ parents on our Zoom Parent/Teacher meetings as well and I am looking forward to working with all of you to ensure we have a really great year.
5/6A is currently looking for a parent rep to act as a bit of an organiser, with me, for activities this year, so if you are interested, please email me. I will work on a first come first serve basis.
What have we been up to?
In weeks 3 and week 4, we have been slowly getting back into our classroom routine. We have begun our units for Maths, Reading, Writing and Inquiry and everyone seems to be looking forward to getting into some proper classwork. Homework also began this week and will generally run from Monday to Monday so that students have the full 7 days to complete it. Any issues with homework completion need to be passed on to Mr D BEFORE the Monday that they are due or must have a note from home.
A huge congratulations should be extended to our fantastic Year 6 Leaders who all did an amazing job with their presentations and election campaigns and have been rewarded with either School Captain, Vice-Captain or House Captain roles. They all spoke brilliantly and showed terrific teamwork, resilience and empathy to their fellow competitors and should be proud of themselves.
In writing we explored the correct structure and techniques for writing an effective persuasive essay and what we actually mean when we say we are being persuasive. Everyone has really enjoyed sharing their opinions on a wide range of topics, now we just have to channel that energy onto the page!
In reading we have been introducing ourselves to Book Club, which will be a huge part of the reading program this year. In small groups we will explore a range of texts and discuss what we read. Each member of the group will have a specific role to play in the discussion and we have enjoyed breaking down these roles.
In Maths we have begun exploring place value and what it means when we say that a number or unit has value. We have looked at Number Lines, Roman Numerals and counting patterns and we also do a daily Maths Mastery quiz to build our skills. We also completed our online Essential Assessment.
Learning Intentions:
Week 5 & 6
Reading: Next week students will receive their books for Book Club (everyone is really excited) and they will find out their team for the term. The Book Clubs will be taken by either Mr Duckett, Ms Anna or Sam with roles passed out on Monday. We will also be exploring how author’s make their work persuasive, to support our writing unit.
Writing: In writing students will be continuing to practice and produce interesting persuasive texts that draw their reader in with powerful language and persuasive techniques, such as rhetorical questions.
Maths: During week 5 and 6 we will be continuing with Place Value, especially focusing on complex number patterns, decimal numbers and how to count in tenths and hundredths.
Inquiry: We will be exploring the Australian Parliamentary system and how our country is governed.
