Empowering Learners
At Cranbourne Secondary College, we provide a dynamic learning environment that emphasises the importance of community relationships and learning. Our purpose is to provide a challenging and stimulating learning environment where students work independently and collaboratively to support them to take responsibility for their learning. This year we ran a successful induction and transition program to support this vision and purpose.
To support student induction and transitions into and through school, we ensure our practices and programs provide appropriate personal, social and academic supports to promote student engagement and wellbeing. We recognised that students were likely to need additional support to adjust to changes due to ongoing pandemic-related disruptions of moving between remote and flexible and face to face learning in the past. To formalise and respond to this need, we introduced a school wide transition program called Empowering Learners.
This program focused on how we learn at Cranbourne Secondary College including, the importance of having a growth mindset, how we can learn with and from each collaboratively, study skills for senior students and visual thinking routines to support learning. The program also included strategies and tools for students to better understand and positively impact their learning data and progress.
For our new Year 7 cohort the week began with the College’s annual Welcome Breakfast. The student’s and their families were invited into the College to share breakfast to help ease any first day nerves. College Principal, Mr David Caughey addressed the students and their families and welcomed them into the college community as they begin their secondary school journey. By the end of the week Year 7’s had had the opportunity to meet a wide variety of students and staff in different learning environments and experiences but a definite highlight of the week for them was the school wide scavenger hunt facilitated by Urban Quest.
With a strong start to the beginning of the year, we look forward to all students at Cranbourne Secondary College experiencing success in 2022.
