Secondary Sports

QGSSSA Cricket

The QGSSSA Cricket Coach had a great start to the season today with a close lost MBC. It was great to see so many girls knew to open Cricket performing so well, and special mention must be given to a number of players for their outstanding performance today. Great work to Abby Harris for a superb 41 not out, Allegra Pollock for some brilliant bowling and Mia Geere for outstanding fielding. All up, it was a great effort from the girls who MBC narrowly defeated in the last two overs of the game. Well done, girls, and we look forward to your performance next week.

QGSSSA Softball

This Saturday morning, both our Opens and Senior A softball teams will commence the season with their first-round fixtures. All games are played at Downey Park, and each team will play one to two matches each Saturday morning. The full draw and times for the games can be found on the College app under the softball tab. All players need to be at the fields just after 6:30 am to ensure they are warmed up and ready for the start of play at 7:30 am.

QGSSSA Gymnastics

This year we have more than 45 girls participating in QG gymnastics, one of the biggest contingents of the year. It is wonderful to see so many girls wanting to take part and compete for Clayfield. The QG event will again be held in the College PE centre, which is looking great, and the new gym gear will ensure a high-quality event occurs. Further details about the event will be released closer to the event in March.

QGSSSA Cross Country

Monday Park Runs

All girls need to complete the following:

  • Sign-up by 1:30 pm on Friday on the Croc Board
  • Select the cafe menu for any food/drinks they wish to purchase
  • Bring along enough money to purchase breakfast

The College bus will depart the College at 6:00 am and take any girls to and bring them back from the running venue. Students can choose to take private transport and meet the coaches at the venue at 6:30 am.

Wednesday Kalinga Park Session

The Wednesday Kalinga Park training sessions are designed to ensure girls are able to run 3 km at the fastest intensity possible. Therefore, these sessions will involve hill work, stair climbs, 3 km runs, 1 km time trials and a range of other activities. Students are to be dropped at Kalinga Park (via the Park Rd entrance area) for the sessions, and the College bus will transport them back to school afterwards.

Fun Fitness Fridays

The Friday cross country training program will involve a range of cross-training activities that break up the season and ensure variety and fun for our girls. These activities will cater for a range of fitness levels and abilities.

Couch to 3 km beginners’ program

Held during each cross-country training session

Week 4 will see the inclusion of a couch to 3 km program aimed at those who have lost their fitness and want to get it back and those who are new to cross country and require a less demanding lead-in to running 3 kms. All girls in Years 7 to 12 are invited to participate in this program. Please contact Mrs. Rebecca Clydesdale if you are new to XC and wish to sign-up, or if you have already registered to do cross country, let the coaches know at the next training session.

QGSSSA Swimming

It has been great to see a number of our swimmers back in the pool and preparing for QG swimming which will be held in week six of this Term. Our lead-in and preparation for this carnival is very short, and we encourage all girls who swam in QG last year and any girls wanting to swim this year to please attend training.

Training is held every morning, Monday to Thursday, and full details can be found on the College app. A reminder that this coming Friday, 18 February, is our first co-hosted meet with St Margaret’s at the Valley Pool. The bus will take all swimmers to the meet and bring them back to school. In addition, our Friends of Sport group will be running a fund-raising BBQ at the pool for all girls. Full details will come out on the app on Monday. If parents wish to collect students from the pool, please ensure you email Ms. Christine Barnes to advise before 5:00 pm on Wednesday 16 February.

Auroura Saffery

On 15 January, Clayfield College student Aurora Saffery competed in the BjP Physical Culture Queensland Maroon Zone Competitions. She placed 2nd overall in the combined 13s/14s section and will be heading to Sydney to compete at the BjP Physical Culture Junior National Competition on 12 February.

What is physical culture you ask? It's a fun, upbeat sport that focuses on pop music that fuses dance styles such as jazz, ballet, hip hop, contemporary, aerobic dance and even yoga! "Physie" (also known as Physical Culture) is the perfect combination of movements designed to increase strength, fitness and flexibility.

Aurora will continue to compete across 2022 and will keep us updated on her progress. Fantastic work, Aurora – Let your light shine!

Each week we love acknowledging and celebrating the achievements of our many students who compete at high levels in sports beyond the College sporting program. For this to occur, we need families to email through these wonderful achievements, sending event details, placings, times, rankings, etc., and photos of students performing or receiving awards. Once again, could we please ask all families to continue to do so by sending through all information to Rebecca Clydesdale at  rclydesdale@clayfield.qld.edu.au to collate and ensure these are published each week.
