AROUND THE COLLEGE & BEYOND

What's happening?

Year 11 Study of Religion

The Year 11 Study of Religion and Religion and Ethics students have enjoyed two recent excursions to different centres of faith in Cairns. In week 6, students visited St John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Kamerunga, where they were welcomed by Fr Menelaos who gave an informative talk about Orthodox Christianity. Students were enamoured with the highly decorated building, the strong smell of incense, the impressive artwork and icons, and, in particular, the relics of John the Baptist (part of his bone!) which could be viewed at the back of the church.

In week 7, students ventured to the Mosque in Cairns North, where local Imam Isa welcomed the students in an Arabic greeting. The Year 11s asked questions about everything ranging from the layout of the mosque, the challenges of fasting during Ramadan through to the differences between Sunni and Shia worship.

As a college we are very grateful to the generosity of leaders of other faith centres in Cairns who always welcome our students and recognise and encourage the importance of interfaith relations. We are looking forward to our next visit in Term 4 to the Buddhist Centre.

Year 7 Design Technology

We have now finished our fourth rotation of Year 7 Technology. The Design Technology unit looks at the process involved in designing, producing and evaluating a new product. The focus in Year 7 is a marble maze. The students design their own layout, construct the marble maze in the workshop and then evaluate the process and product.

The best maze from rotation will be entered into the DATTA, Design and Technology Teachers Association competition, at the end of the year. Mitchell Scarcella was the winner from the latest rotation. He worked patiently and precisely to produce a well-finished product.

Year 10

Our Year 10 Food Technology students cooked Stromboli - sliced pizza - in their last practical lesson of the term. As you can see from the photos the boys enjoyed cooking this Italian-American favourite.

Catering Evenings

Year 11 Hospitality students recently catered for the music evenings in McLaughlin Theatre. On the menu were Danish hot dogs, butter chicken and rice, cakes and biscuits.

Years 11 and 12 students also produced food for the combined colleges Ensemble Evening the following week.
