Year 10 and VCAL students in 2022
Work Experience this year was in considerable threat of not going ahead due to COVID, but at the 11th hour it was given the go ahead by the Department, which meant that most students, who had been successful in attaining a placement, were able to enjoy a week of participating in the world of work. Those students, who had sourced work experience but due to COVID were unable to attend, were involved a “Virtual Work Experience with The Careers Department online at school.
Being involved in work experience in one form or another is an invaluable insight into the world of work, regardless of the type or degree in which of work which you participated in.
The benefits of Work Experience:
- Career aspirations can be confirmed or the realisation that the career is not for you
- The understanding of the world of work is gained, first hand
- New skills are developed
- Team building skills
- Interpersonal and communication skills
- The relationship between what you are learning at school and what is happening in the workplace is developed
- Independence and confidence grow
- Motivation to continue with the career path you have chosen
- Exploration of Career Options.

In 2022 Year 10 students will again be expected to participate in the Careers Experience program as it is an integral part of the Career Education program. The duration for Year 10 students is one week which usually takes place in the last week of term 2. So now is a good time to start thinking about where you may like to do your work experience next year.
Some occupations are highly competitive and sought after, therefore positions for work experience often fill up early and quickly.
Students choosing VCAL in 2022 are also encouraged to participate in two weeks of work experience before entering VCAL, to strengthen the skills required when employed as an apprentice or trainee.
Tips that might assist in attaining work experience are:
- Ask parents, relatives and family friends for help and advice on securing work experience.
- Google businesses in your local area
- Prepare a script of what you need to ask
- Create a resume if you don’t already have one as well as a covering letter
