Year 9 Leadership

The yLead excursion for the Year 9 Middle Years Leaders was an opportunity to embrace our leadership skills. We got to take part in many fun and interactive activities with other leaders from different schools. We chose a ‘bestie’ for the day, so that we could bond together and grow a strong friendship just in the one day. We had a few guest speakers as well who were all really inspirational to listen to and all had a focus on their speeches of staying positive no matter what. Overall, this day was an excellent experience and a very creative way to meet new people.  We all had an amazing day.

Year 10 History

Empire School 1942

On Friday 15 June, the three Year 10 History classes combined to experience what it was like to live in Australia in the 1940s when they participated in the annual “Empire School” incursion at the College presented by Keith Baverstock.

Keith regaled our students with fascinating insights about classroom etiquette and discipline in a typical Australian classroom from the World War II era. Students were prepared to take risks as they engaged in a number of purposeful role play activities which showed them what school life was like over 70 years ago. They learnt how to write proper cursive using pen and ink correctly; undertook a Grade 5 spelling test and re-enacted a wartime air raid drill.

Some of the students share their reflections about what they gained from the session:

“Mr Baverstock was very engaging. I learnt a lot of details about the etiquette and the daily routines of school children the 1940s.” Hania H

“The session was fun and interesting. I particularly enjoyed the handwriting lessons where we wrote in cursive with pen and ink. It was challenging not to smudge the ink.” Chelsea A

“The most purposeful aspect of the session for me was learning what our grandparents would have experienced at school many years ago.” Matthew A

“I learnt that boys and girls were segregated at school back in the 1940s. Boys were not able to walk with girls while wearing school uniform, even if they were siblings.” Cooper H

“Mr Baverstock really got into character and made the workshop enjoyable. It was a fun and unforgettable way to learn about our history.” Gabriel C

“The workshop was purposeful as it reinforced the learning we had done in our History lessons about life in Australia during the 1940s.” Alexander M

The workshop certainly provided a special opportunity for the Year 10s to empathise with their peers from the past. They found all of the activities in Keith’s workshop interesting and worthwhile. I sincerely thank the students for their outstanding behaviour on the day.

Year 10 Geography

During Term 2, Year 10 Geography students have been studying the topic Environmental Change and Management. The class began by discussing the concept of Sustainability in relation to environmental functions. This was followed with an evaluation of ecosystem services in the local area and their importance to ensure the sustainability of biodiversity. The site used for our focus was the Greenfields Wetlands located next to the Watershed Café, Salisbury. The wetlands, constructed in the 1990s, were designed to improve water quality for the Barker Inlet, provide flood protection and a provide a valuable habitat for wildlife.

On a wet and cold Wednesday 13 June, students visited the site to conduct a series of field work activities in order to investigate the natural vegetation and wildlife found at the site. Field work sketches and photographs were taken with students also completing a number of questions based on information found along the trail. During the day students were able to observe a Purple Swamphen, Pied Cormorant, Nankeen Night Heron and Red Samphire.

Back in the classroom students presented their findings by writing a report, but also used Google Tour Creator to create a virtual reality(VR) tour of the wetlands using photos and information recorded on the day. VR is an exciting technology providing students with the opportunity to learn and present information in a different way.

Pedal Prix 6 Hour Event

Sunday 17 June was Endeavour’s first Pedal Prix race for 2018! The 6hr race was held on the Victoria Park racecourse. For most it was the first time riding the bike since last year’s 24hr race back in September. Last Sunday’s race also gave three rookies a chance to have a go in the Pedal Prix bike. The Endeavour team performed really well. Both the bikes managed to finish somewhat unscathed; however, there were a few incidents and minor hiccups along the way. Weather was also a factor in the race as rain made it difficult for the riders to see. Next up is the next 6hr race at Victoria Park and it will be held on Sunday 29 July... Bring it on!

6hr Race Results
