GIRLS WRITE UP

On the 15th and 16th of June, four of our highly talented poets were given the prestigious opportunity to perform their own team poetry piece for Girls Write Up (GWU), a gender- inclusive festival for teens, held at the National Gallery of Victoria.  The students did a magnificent job representing our school and for their inspiring, insightful and powerful poetry which was very well received given the feedback from the organisers.  GWU was established for anyone who has felt limited by gender and wants to understand how language can not only constrain but also be used to liberate and empower.  It forms the schools' program for the Stella Prize

Student reflections:

Felix Briggs, Year 8 - "I was invited onto the performing panel for the Teenspeak Poetry slam and I had an amazing time. My group was given the prompt "Can art save the world?" and our original poem was composed like a debate. A week before the event we decided to rewrite the entire thing so that it flowed and then suddenly snapped to a different perspective. Overall I feel that the entire event helped me with my discomfort of speaking in front of large crowds. I think I was okay because I was with friends."

Ellen Sharkey, Year 7 - "Girls write up is important for young people all over Australia, it helps young people find and share their voice, it helps young people of all shapes, sizes, and colours realize they're important, they're valid, and they deserve to be heard. This is something young people don't get told, but it is something every young person needs to hear.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB

Our purpose is to promote creativity through photography, to share and critique the photographs of peers, to educate and improve technical skills, and to spread the love of photography throughout the FCC community.

Having a few photography-related outings per semester, gives the members of the club an opportunity to test their photography skills outside of the school environment with each other. Whereas our weekly meetings provide members with basic Photoshop skills to edit, retouch and modify their photographs.

eBOOKS

A testimonial from Ashleigh Cassidy - Year 7, who recently won the eBook reading competition:

"An eBook is just such a great way of reading because if you're tired and you want to read but don't want to flick the page it's easy you just have to click a button and also it's smart. Because I know I love it so, so will you."

Free eBooks can be accessed 24/7 by students via our library website or by following this link and signing in using your Compass ID:  https://footscraycity.wheelers.co/
