Foundation News

In Literacy, the words of the week are YES, FLY with the focus on ‘y’. After that we our word will be WAX with the introduction of the letters ‘w’ & ‘x’ followed by the word VET where we will focus on the letter ‘v’. We have almost learnt all the letter names and sounds through the SMART Foundation spelling program we commenced at the beginning of this year. We are so pleased to find that almost all children know all 26 alphabet names and the corresponding sounds.

Parents can assist their child’s reading comprehension by asking questions about what is happening on a page or throughout a story, during the reading of take home readers or at a bedtime story. Remember to upload any books you read to your child onto the Premier’s Reading Challenge site, using your child’s user name and password.

In Mathematics. We will be working on data, where the students will collect information from asking YES or NO questions and creating graphs from that data. We will follow with patterns, where students will copy and create patterns with things like shapes and numbers.

In Inquiry, we will continue to investigate our community and discover what is around our home and school. We will look into important places and people and what it is they do. The students will use Google Maps to assist them to identify what is in their community.

As we are coming to the end of term 2, the children are at the stage where they are ready to become more independent. To support this it would be great to see the students organising their own belongings when they arrive to school each morning. That would be encouraged by unpacking their own bags, saying goodbye at the door, changing their own take home books and putting their water bottles away.

Looking forward to a wonderful second half of the term.

Year 1 News

 Light and Sound Incursion

On Monday, 27th of May, the Year Ones had their ‘Mad About Science’ incursion on Light and Sound. Students were very excited to investigate Light and Sound by using vibration from tuning forks to bounce ping pong balls, blindfolds to rely on their sense of sound and prisms to split light into rainbows, as well as many other activities. Here are a few interesting facts they learnt:

  • Bioluminescence is when animals produce a light
  • The smallest particles of matter are called atoms
  • There is no air in space, which means there is nothing for sound to bounce off. This is why there is no sound in space.
