SMP Fitness and Co-ordination Activities

All of the Prep classes come together Session 5 on Friday to do SMP.

The students are in colour groups of mixed Prep classes and they finish the week by participating in fun activities. The Preps have the students from grade 4 classes to guide them through their activities. The grade 4 students assist the Preps and offer encouragement and positive feedback.

The preps are already co-operating well in their groups and showing an improvement in spatial awareness and co-ordination.

Prep Writing

In term 2 the preps have started to do some writing about their weekend. First they share and talk about what they did on the weekend. Then they draw about their weekend. Next the teacher writes some simple sentences with the students and the students have a go at doing some writing of their own.

Another important part of the Prep writing program is experience -based writing activities. These are fun activities that are shared and enjoyed and talked about. So far the Preps have made paper chain caterpillars, played balloon volley ball and made origami dog faces. The preps have really enjoyed these activities and are motivated to write about them.

Reading

This term we are working towards students solving words to assist with fluency when reading. In particular students need to recognise star words or high frequency words automatically so that they can spend more time on solving more complex words. Students who already have this skill were challenged to analyse the frequency of high frequency words as they read. To further implement the skill of solving words we are looking at strategies for students to use independently such as:

What words can we make from these chunks?

In Writing we are working on Functional Writing which is about writing notes, cards, emails, lists, invitations and letters and in Maths we are learning more about 2 Dimensional Shapes.

For our play based focus this term we are looking at the Caroline Springs Community using a history perspective.
