Green Team

Term 4 in the Garden.

The Green Team have had their sights set on planting out the vegetable garden for spring and summer. After much research and discussion we headed down to The Diggers club to select our plants. We have planted the following plants over the past few weeks:

-Grape vine

-Raspberry vine

-Pineapple sage

-Liquorice root

-Tomatoes

-Apple mint

-Sage

-Lemon verbena

-Sugar snap peas

-Spring onions

-World’s largest pumpkin seeds

We have had our minds set on growing the largest pumpkin for the Red Hill show, we are a bit confident that we will win!

We have also been in the kitchen cooking up our favourite dish, apple and rhubarb crumble. The recipe is below, please feel free to help yourself to the fresh rhubarb growing in the garden.

Apple and rhubarb crumble

Ingredients:

4 apples

Third of a cup of caster sugar,

Half a lemon

Seven large rhubarb stalks

125g of creamed butter

Three table spoons of self-raising flower

Three table spoons of brown sugar

Cinnamon 1-2 tea spoon

1-2 rolled oats

Add more butter, sugar or flower depending on consistency and taste

Method:

Cream butter, then mix flour and brown sugar through until completely mixed through. Add cinnamon and rolled oats and mix until it has a crumbly texture. Put in oven on a tray for 15 minutes or until brown. Whilst the crumble is in the oven, cut apple into small cubes and cut rhubarb into similar sized chunks. Place in pot and boil with half a lemon’s juice and a third of a cup of sugar. Cook until apple and rhubarb are soft. Put some of the fruit and crumble in a bowl, add ice cream and enjoy!

Happy cooking and gardening, The Green Team
