Second-hand does not mean second best!
The Fashion Illustration and Sustainable Design elective enjoyed their visit last week to two opportunity shops in the local area, Vinnies and The Salvos. The main focus of the excursion was to research the variety and quality of items donated and explore the idea of redesigning and ‘breathing new life’ into them through innovation.
With a budget of $20, a lace curtain, white Sportscraft trousers, a gold mini skirt, black top and an evening dress were purchased. The class will explore how these items can be reused and redesigned through the remainder of the elective.
Every year tonnes of clothing are thrown away but the cost of what we purchase runs far deeper than the price tag. Textile waste, such as synthetic chemicals and dye pollution is responsible for almost 20% of industrial water pollution. A large proportion of textile waste ends up in landfill and there is a negative social and human cost to manufacturing as well. With this knowledge we can take steps to reduce our waste and protect the environment through thinking more about sustainable and eco design.
should visit TAFE and university websites such as:
and check out their open days. There are lots of resources available in The Careers Hub and Bronte is very happy to meet and discuss students' interests and the opportunities available to them.
