World War II Memorial Box

As part of the Year 10 History course, students have been learning about Australia’s experiences in World War II.  Greensborough College hired a memorial box from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.  This contained Australian and Japanese primary sources that were over 70 years old.  The History students were able to carefully examine the contents by using the gloves provided.  Some of the items included newspapers, photographs, maps, ration cards, paintings by prisoners of war (POWs), medals and military uniforms.

The inquisitive students thoroughly enjoyed exploring real objects from our nation’s past.  They tried on some of Australia’s army, navy and air force uniforms and were surprised that people who had served in the war actually wore some of these items of clothing.  Students also completed a number of activities drawing on the information provided.  This helped to broaden student understanding of Australia’s participation and experiences in World War II in both the European and Pacific Theatres.
