Year Adviser Reports

Year 7
Congratulations to Year 7 for a successful and positive first term of High School. I have been hearing positive comments from teachers about their effort and application to their work, which at this early stage is great.
A big congratulations to those Year 7 students who participated in ‘Henry Kendall‘s got Talent 2017’. Well done to Molly Brian and Sharnae Bergan who not only made it through to the final, but placed second. The girls definitely wowed the crowd. It was amazing to see so many Year 7 students supporting the girls at both performances.
In class Year 7 created identity projects, which they thoroughly enjoyed. These have been on display in the library. They are currently working diligently through ‘7 steps to writing success’. Class teachers have been very happy with the improvements in their writing.
On Monday Year 7 went to the Great Aussie Bush Camp for 3 days. We all had a fantastic time. Look for a full report on the camp in the next edition of Henry Kendall Highlights next term!

Year 8
Year 8 have had a very busy term and have been involved in a wide variety of academic, sporting, musical and creative activities. To capture this I had a quick walk around and following are some photos which make up a snapshot of what they have been up to.
The end of term is usually a very hectic time with lots of assessments to complete. It is very pleasing to see the very high quality of work produced. I appreciate the time and interest that parents and carers have shown to support their child. The students really will have earned their end of term break, and I look forward to seeing them refreshed and ready to go in term 2.
Mrs Julie Starkey Year 8 Adviser
Year 9
Year 9 have had a very successful start to 2017. Students have been settling well into their mandatory subjects and into their chosen electives. The feedback I hear from staff about student diligence and effort is very positive.
It’s been a very busy term and Year 9 have really been involved in a great deal of activities in school. We had a good representation of Year 9 students involved in the school swimming carnival, the zone carnival, various team sports and in Henry Kendall Has Talent.
I’m looking forward to another successful term that’s full of challenges and achievements for Year 9.

Year 10
What a great start to 2017 Year 10!
We have welcomed fifteen new students who have settled well into Henry Kendall High School. These students are already making a positive contribution to our year. Congratulations to Year 10 for welcoming each student with a friendly smile. We have had 8 recipients of Year Adviser awards and would like to congratulate these students on their efforts both in class and in the school community. Thank you to many Year 10 students who are peer tutoring each Tuesday morning in the Maths and Milo program.
Year 10 have been extremely busy this term with many assignments and assessment tasks due so students are beginning to learn the essential skill of time management. Congratulations to students who have managed their time and completed all tasks to the best of their ability. We hope you enjoyed your English excursion to Laycock St Theatre to see Dracula.
Many students have represented the school this term. Congratulations to those students who made it through to zone for swimming. Mitch Wood, Damien Muspratt, Tim Seabrook and Jack Li also advanced through to round 3 in basketball and definitely held their own against the senior boys.
Miss Perkins took 16 students from Year 10 mentors along to The Great Aussie Bush Camp this week. The mentors led a large cohort of Year 7 students through many team building exercises and challenges whilst having loads of fun.
Congratulations to Karl Suczynski, Corbin Watman, Matthew Mott, Jessey Ritchie and Jack Josephs who had their sculpture displayed at the prestigious Central Vision. Central Vision displays the best artworks on the Central Coast.
As we move towards senior years in 2018, it is important each student takes ownership of their learning, enters each class ready to learn and attempts each task to the best of their ability.
We wish everyone a safe and relaxing break.

Year 11
Term 1 of Year 11 is often a challenging period for many students. There is an increase in workload and new challenging content areas to learn. The Year 11 students have approached this challenge with maturity and commitment and should be proud of their progress.
As the year progresses there will be periods where organisation and planning will be particularly important. I would like to encourage the students to actively engage with each subject, talk to their teachers and plan ahead for school and external commitments.
In response to some recent enquiries, I would like to encourage all students and their families to consult the Year 11 Assessment Schedule if you are planning a period of absence from school. In most situations alternative arrangements can be made with adequate notice.
I hope that you enjoy the upcoming school holidays and take the time to relax. Term 2 will be upon us shortly and I look forward to watching you all progress and continue to do your best.

Year 12
Year 12 have just completed their mid-course exam period and I have been very impressed with the way the year group has conducted themselves in the MPC. I’m sure many students have prepared adequately for their different subjects. Results and rankings will be given to the students upon their return in term 2, and my advice would be to reflect on which sections of the exams and which types of questions were answered well or not answered well and adjust study routines accordingly.
With only two terms of in-class schooling remaining until the HSC exams, there are many exciting (and nerve-wracking) events on the horizon. Firstly, on Saturday April 1, Year 12 are running a fundraising BBQ at Bunnings West Gosford which I am sure will be a fun and tiring day. Ms Keft has begun the process of developing the Year 12 Yearbook, and is meeting weekly with a dedicated team of Year 12 students. Each student has been given a pink booklet that is very important in terms of developing content for the yearbook. This needs to be submitted to Ms Keft or myself in early term 2.
With most subjects half way through their course content, students should be developing a home study routine to prepare for their last assessment tasks and trial HSC exams. The key to success is preparation, and all Year 12 teachers are more than happy to read practice responses or completed past HSC papers to give feedback. The HSC is a marathon, not a sprint. Those who take the time to study regularly will outperform those who cram in the weeks leading up the HSC exams.
There have been many academic and sporting successes by Year 12 students this term. They include:
- Peta Ralph, Teneille Jacobson and Owen Butterworth competing in the Lions Youth of the Year – with Teneille and Peta progressing to the Zone finals.
- Year 12 students in the successful Open Boys Basketball and Open Boys Football teams.
I wish each student a well-deserved break and looking forward to welcoming them back for term 2.
