Sports Report
Sport has seen a smooth start to the year with all Tuesday afternoon groups running efficiently, largely due to the efforts of all sport teachers. Term 2 sports will be chosen in the first two weeks of the term and will commence in week 3. All parents are requested to assist in helping to get all notes in promptly.
Year 7 are in the middle of their tennis unit, that will continue into term 2. Vaughan Park have kindly offered to give all Year 7 students free membership to Gosford tennis. If your child is interested they should have already brought a membership note home.
Term 1 is a very busy time for school sporting teams with numerous teams competing across a wide variety of sports. Some results of note include the boys basketball who had wins against Marsdon High and Wadalba High before going down to Narara Valley. Boys volleyball who were successful against Kariong and Killarney Hts, before coming up against a hot Ryde Secondary College. The girls under 15’s netball continued their campaign against Mackellar Girls after a successful run at the end of last year. They unfortunately lost in a well contested game. The open girls football had a comprehensive win against Wyong.
Many other teams have competed in matches and have represented our school with great sportsmanship, these include girls volleyball, table tennis, girls basketball and boys and girls water polo. Thanks go out to all the teachers who gave their time to ensure students had these fantastic opportunities and parents who both supported and helped with transport when necessary.
In PE classes students will have commenced practice for our cross country and athletics carnivals, which will take place during term 2. Successful students will be given the opportunity to represent the school at zone, region and state levels. In swimming, 2 students who have been successful and are currently representing at CHS level for swimming, are Jess Davies and Karl Suczynski. Other students who will be representing at CHS include Celine Chin in golf and Mason Colwell in touch.
Students have also excelled in sports outside of school, these include Katie Gunn, Oscar Tebbutt, Archie Tebbutt and Tyler Gunn, who all have done exceptionally well in the recent Australian Athletics Championships. Of these special mention must go to Tyler who won a silver medal in his age for 400m and made the final of the open mens 400m. Tyler’s goal is to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in The Gold Coast, something we all wish him the best of luck with.
We hope for a much better bout of weather for next term and wish all the best in their sporting endeavours.
When too much sport is barely enough.

Open Boys Basketball
This term, the Open Boys Basketball team entered the Shell Cup, which is the state knockout competition. Historically, basketball hasn’t been one of Henry Kendall’s strong sports, but this team set out to prove the past wrong.
In the first round, the team was drawn against Marsden High School, from Sydney’s northern suburbs. On a warm Friday afternoon, the HK boys got off to a fast start, opening a big first half lead. A change of tactics from Marsden saw them create an exciting second half, with Henry Kendall only winning the game by two points in the end. The team was very appreciative of the students and staff who supported them during the game and made for an electric atmosphere.
The team, who had nicknamed themselves ‘The Oilers’ then travelled north to take on Wadalba Community School in round 2. In this game, the team was never really troubled and dominated throughout, easily accounting for the opposition, winning by 23.
Back at home for round 3, we were matched against Narara Valley High School. In a tough and physical game, Narara were victorious. Despite the loss, ‘The Oilers’ have created new expectations for basketball at Henry Kendall, and a number of key players are still here for a couple more years. We would love to see our big electronic scoreboard read more wins for HKHS in the future. MVP (most valuable player) for the three games was Dylan Verrell, who led the team with encouragement and tenacity. I would also like to thank Coach Leute, who gave up her own time to come in and run training sessions with team.
The team was: Dylan Verrell (captain), Jack Flynn, Nico Falzarano, Ty Daniel, Dominic Taylor, Thomas Josephs - Year 12
Horus Roque - Year 11
Tim Seabrook, Damien Muspratt, Mitchell Wood and Jack Li - Year 10.
Open Boys Volleyball
As part of their training regime, Mr Pratt's Open Boys Volleyball Team (aka the 'Prattie All Stars') took on some staff members for a lunchtime friendly. Check out some GoPro footage from the game.
Open Girls Water Polo
The Open Girls Water Polo team played in the knockout comp at Gosford Pool on Monday 13 March. We had a few Year 11 players who have played for the school before, and lots of good swimmers who were prepared to give it a go. No club players on the team this time so it was a pretty difficult match against the Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College team who were mostly seniors and club players. We did score one goal – well done Georgia Riley, and everyone else learnt to defend and throw the ball. It was a huge learning experience and now the girls have an idea of how hard the game is and how it works. Thanks team and well done to:
Year 11 - Georgia Riley, Abbey and Mae Johnson (especially for your coaching and training enthusiasm)
Year 9 - Katalena Abarca
Year 8 – Hayley McTeare, Sophie Mertens, Olivia Pearson and Charlotte Tucker
Year 7 – Emily Borthwick, Natasha Grimley, Samara Hodgkins, Samantha Leslie, Lucy Lou, Ella Meese, Skye Regan, Jade Sweeney and Abbey Welsby.
CHS Swimming
Congratulations Jessica Davies!
Jessica has qualified for the 50m freestyle at CHS Swimming.
Under 15’s Netball
The 15’s Girls Netball team have had a very successful campaign. The competition started late in term 4 and the girls had some very good wins to make it through to round 5. They had to travel to Sydney and play on some extremely hot days but they always worked hard and played some excellent netball.
The final game last week saw us play Mackellar Girls High who fielded a very strong team and outclassed us on the day. The girls played with excellent spirit and sportsmanship and played at their best the whole game.
HKHS netball team:
Eliza Churchwood, Marley Irvine, Tayla Lamb, Clare Norris, Breeana Irvine, Melissa McCarthy, Rayne Pene, Payton Pene, Eliza McFawn, Casey Purvis.
Thanks go to Caelyn Ryan for umpiring throughout the competition.
MVP – Eliza Churchwood
