Health Centre News

By Nurse Cecile

Brighton Primary School has been involved in the First Aid in Schools Program for several years. All our students from Prep to Grade 6 have participated in this valuable program in teaching children what to do in minor events and in an emergency. All teaching is age appropriate and interactive.

This year we were involved in remote sessions via zoom.

All our students participated in the program last week, which was a wonderful effort and we have had such positive feedback.

Students learnt basic skills in first aid as well as how to manage asthma, anaphylaxis, minor burns and they listened intently. We are very proud of our first aiders in every year level. They were fantastic!

Here is some feedback from some of our students:

  • I learnt a lot about DRSABCD and what to do when someone is unconscious
  • I think it works well online – we learnt a lot!
  • I enjoyed doing the quiz because it was fun and it tests your knowledge
  • I enjoyed learning about first aid
  • I learnt what position to put someone in if they are unconscious to help save their life

I would recommend that your child continue to learn the importance of first aid.

St John Ambulance have developed an interactive app which I would recommend to all parents.

It is free and they learn how to:

  • stay safe and protect themselves from Danger
  • Check if a patient is unconscious
  • Calmly call Triple 0 (000) to speak with an emergency operator
  • Inspect someone’s airway if needed
  • How to look, listen and feel if someone is breathing
  • Carefully place someone in the recovery position which can help save their life

I hope you are all keeping well and enjoy the school holidays.

Kind regards,

Nurse Cecile
