Principal's Message

Dear Students, Parents, Carers and Families,

Indigenous Literacy Day - Wednesday 2nd September

Next Wednesday 2nd of September is Indigenous Literacy Day and the Indigenous Literacy Foundation have created a national, virtual Youtube Live Premiere event at 12.30pm on Wednesday 2 September for a celebration of Indigenous culture, stories, language and literacy. In previous years, this celebration has taken place at Sydney Opera House with children from remote communities, local schools, ILF ambassadors and supporters. This year, due to COVID-19, it is open for the first time to everyone - Australia-wide!

Indigenous Literacy Day is an amazing Foundation who are truly making a difference and whom we are proud supporters of. Last year, Maramba Primary School ran a very successful second hand book sale with all money raised donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. With us all in the midst of remote learning this year, our next Wellbeing Wednesday will be based on a wonderful day of Indigenous literacy and cultural activities to join in the celebrations. Additionally, each class will host a live reading of an Indigenous text through WebEx at some point during the week to provide more time for classes to share, celebrate and appreciate Indigenous literature.

While remote communities are facing many difficulties, one of them is that they don’t have many, if any, books for their children to read. As a result, money raised for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation goes towards providing appropriate quality books to children in remote communities.

We have created our own fundraiser through Everyday Hero https://give.everydayhero.com/au/maramba-primary-school with the collected funds being donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. We would greatly appreciate it if you could help support this wonderful organisation by making a small donation as every little bit helps. Every $10 raised puts a book into the hands of a child in remote Australia.

Safety in the Sun – Be SunSmart!

Even with the majority of students being at home for school this term, it is now that time of the year where it is important to be taking the necessary precautions to be safe in the sun. As a SunSmart accredited school for 14 years, we are very aware of the importance in ensuring that our students and your children continue to be protected in the sun.

Too much of the sun’s UV can cause sunburn, skin and eye damage and skin cancer. UV damage accumulated during childhood and adolescence is strongly associated with an increased risk of skin cancer in later life. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, with two in three Australians developing some form of skin cancer before age 70.

The UV levels are rising again to be three and above so please continue to Slip on sun protective clothing, Slop on SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, Slap on a wide brimmed hat, Seek shade and, if practical, Slide on wrap-around sunglasses until the 1st June 2021.

Please check the daily sun protection times to be sure. These are available on the free SunSmart app and widget, in the weather section of the newspaper or at sunsmart.com.au even in the cooler autumn weather, that UV exposure all adds up.
