Student Excellence Program

Student Excellence Program

Supporting high-ability students in Victoria

The Victorian Education Department has made a significant commitment to supporting students who demonstrate high ability. The Victorian High-Ability program will provide up to 48,000 high-ability students in Years 5 to 8 at government schools, the opportunity to participate in 10-week online extension and enrichment programs, in English and Mathematics.

This program will focus on tasks that stimulate students’ critical thinking, problem solving and creativity – enriching their understanding of English and Mathematics. The program will not focus on accelerating students through core Victorian Curriculum content. Students will be pushed out of their learning comfort zone and parents and caregivers should be aware that many high-ability students may not be accustomed to this type of challenge. Students may need to be reassured that being challenged in this way is an important part of learning.

The virtual program is delivered by Virtual School Victoria. After completing the virtual program, students will participate in a face-to-face masterclass with other high-ability students from schools in their local area. All masterclasses will incorporate the latest COVID-19 advice and risk mitigation strategies to maintain a safe environment for students and staff.

The Department is centrally managing the selection process for the program based on student academic performance. Parents of students selected for the program will be provided with more information about the program shortly. If you have any questions or would like further information on this initiative please feel free to make contact.
