Term 3 Week 7 Snapshot

Welcome to Week 7 of Home Learning

Only four more weeks until the end of Term 3! Just a reminder to check when students' mini lessons will occur each day.  Thank you to all parents for your continued support during this time!

Please read the following overview of the learning tasks for Week 7 of Term 3. The daily schedule, with additional instructions and resources, will continue to be posted on Google Classroom the night before each day of learning.

If your child has completed the day's tasks, they may be interested in completing one of these optional tasks. These tasks are open-ended, inquiry based and hands-on.

English

An overview of tasks for reading and writing this week are as follows:

READING

Students should be completing at least 20 minutes of independent reading a day as well as completing the tasks set by the teacher. Tasks this week focus on building understanding of persuasive texts and include:

  • Small group guided reading
  • Analysing the purpose of texts
  • Reading assessment around critical reading skills
  • Reading for enjoyment - own choice
  • Genre explorations - identifying features of narrative genres

WRITING

This week will be the final week focusing on persuasive writing. Tasks this week include:

  • Planning, drafting, revising, publishing a final persuasive text related to the UOI Summative Assessment
  • Writing choice board

While writing, we encourage students to use the writing cycle to ensure they are continuously developing and improving their writing.

The writing cycle consists of five stages:

1. Plan

2. Draft

3. Revise

4. Edit

5. Publish

Word Study

Students will continue to practice 30 "codes" of the English language through watching videos uploaded by their class teacher. Grades 4A, 4B, 4C and 4D will continue to learn Rule 30, a spelling rule which explains when to choose the code "ar", as in "car", or the code "a", as in "fast". 4E will continue to explore Rule 18, a spelling rule which explains when to choose the code '"ai" or "ay" and "oi" or "oy". They will also explore morphology through prefixes and suffixes. At the end of the week they will demonstrate their understanding of the rule through an assessment. The "bootcamp" process allows students to practice the new skill until it becomes "automatic" in their brains.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students will begin to learn about decimals and their application. They are also encouraged to play number games or use Mathletics to continue practicing basic number skills. Tasks for the week include:

  • Making connections between fractions and decimals
  • Using a number line to explore tenths and hundredths
  • Essential Assessment - online assessment software
  • Mental maths choice board

Unit of Inquiry

This week, we will finalise our inquiry into how people use initiatives to have an impact on environments. Students began their Summative Assessment last week and will complete it this week. Students will engage in the following tasks:

  • Choosing an action to take connected to their chosen environmental problem
  • Collecting evidence and explaining why they believe their action will be effective
  • Planning, drafting and creating a good copy of their action
  • Taking action based on their chosen environmental problem
  • Reflecting on their learning and the  Summative Assessment process

Wellbeing

Students will participate in Circles discussions to talk about how to collaborate online inclusively and respectfully.

This week the students are being invited to revisit some of the wellbeing strategies they practised in Term 2. The challenge cards include yoga, mindfulness activities, brain breaks and mantra cards.  The students are being reminded to think about the strategies that work best for them.  They may wish to make a poster for their workspace, reminding them to use the strategies they have identified, to help keep them calm and focused.
