DRAWING AND SCULPTURE YEAR 10

Year 10 Drawing and Sculpture students have been exploring the National Gallery of Victoria online, viewing and discovering contemporary and historic artworks that they love while learning about the artists that produced them. This became the basis of their mashup drawing. Here are some of the final result.

In Drawing and Sculpture this semester, we created a mashup piece, taking inspiration from two very distinct artworks. Although it required a bit of thinking to find a way to cohesively integrate the two different artworks, I very much enjoyed playing around with a variety of materials such as water colour, collage and fine liners to create my piece. I also loved experimenting with detailed line work and contrasting those delicate linear features with more bold blocks of solid colour. Ultimately, I found that doing such a task enabled me to focus on embodying the tranquility that entails creating artwork.

This mashup task was a chance to express creativity and skill. Using materials that I had at home to create a resemblance of two unique pieces was a great challenge. A challenge that was really interesting and exciting to work on. Grasping ideas, objects, colours and shapes whilst getting the chance to explore and use different techniques from each piece. The mashup between the two different yet somewhat similar pieces pushed me to think outside the box and gave me an interestingly unique outcome.

DIGITAL PAINTING YEAR 10

In Year 10 painting students have been exploring the master artist David Hockney and undertaken four weeks of digital painting.  After creating mini still lifes, photographing and drawing them, students used digital programs to create vibrant paintings with digital brushes. It’s been lots of fun catching up with these girls in a virtual setting every week and their work is very exciting.  Some of the programs used were Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, Procreate, Medibang, Autodesk sketchbook and Ibis paint.

When I was making this artwork, I got to use my creativity with all the different colours and textures. Drawing this picture on my ipad was somewhat a kind of break from everything, I got to go outside in the sun and just draw with all the different kinds of brushes, making a piece of art that I enjoyed making. From this experience, I have learnt that digital art is so similar to replicating painting and drawing on paper or a canvas.

I chose this still life because it looked nice and simple to me and I could isolate the plant and make it stand out from the rest of the still life. I also chose it because I liked the way that the leaves of the plant droops down and hangs. The colour palette that I chose was very bright and vibrant colours, almost neon. I chose this colour palette because I love bright colours and they reminded me of some of David Hockney’s artwork. I also love the 80’s and the bright colours reminded me of the 80s and the fashion trends at the time.

Throughout the process of this painting, there were many struggles and challenges I had to overcome such as learning how to use “Procreate” as well as, learning new techniques like blending shadowing and lighting. Overall this was a very fun and interesting experience! by Emily Ly

I very much underestimated how long this digital painting would take but the end result came out very beautifully. I loved how there was a direct light source to refract onto the petals to create a delightful result. Definitely will explore the world of digital art and all its glory in the future.  by Liz Chy

LOGOS & BRANDING YEAR 10

In Semester 1, the talented Year 10 Visual Communication Design students studied the important role of design in company marketing. They generated, developed and refined their own design concepts using the design process together with the software Adobe Illustrator to create a logo for their chosen client. The logo was then applied to a range of products to create a corporate brand identity. The students completed the marketing for their client by designing and creating an advertisement for the company. To complete this task the students also learnt skills in the software program Adobe Photoshop.

DRAWING AS A MEANS OF COMMUNICATION YEAR 11

As part of Unit 1 the talented Year 11 VCD students used observational drawing as a means to communicate ideas and concepts to an audience. They developed their understanding of the aesthetics, appearance and function of objects and structures and investigated ways of representing form and surface textures by applying different materials and media to render drawings. The students used creative, critical and reflective thinking to design their own compositions and mixed media to complete their final presentations.

DESIGN ELEMENTS & DESIGN PRINCIPLES YEAR 11

During the first lockdown the talented Year 11 students studied the design elements and design principles. They experimented with these elements and principles, using manual and digital drawing and methods to visualise ideas and concepts and answer a Brief. The Brief required the students to design promotional postcards for the ‘Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria’. The postcards were to promote the gardens reopening after their closure, due to the current Coronavirus. The students used the design process and the software Adobe Illustrator to complete their final presentations.
