Literacy
Reading and Viewing
Students will continue to learn to identify aspects of a writer’s craft and the features of these aspects, as well as a variety of comprehension strategies, for example, drawing conclusions, identifying the main idea, discussing word choices and the figurative language that a writer uses. We will be exploring these concepts with a lens on different types of texts.
Writing
The major focus of our writing this term will be writing to entertain. In the first half of the term the students will be explicitly taught the aspects of a narrative text and given a proforma to help them plan and write their own story. We will then move onto exploring other ways of entertaining the audience with our writing ie. poetry. We will also continue to use the SMART spelling approach to explicitly teach spelling patterns to the students. The students will also explore various grammar topics, such as verb tense.
Speaking and Listening
The students will be planning, rehearsing and delivering presentations incorporating factual and imaginative elements. We will be discussing literary experiences, sharing responses and expressing a point of view.
Numeracy
During this term we will be focusing on the following:
Number and Algebra
Money and Financial Matters
Represent money values in multiple ways and count the change required for simple transactions to the nearest five cents
Solve problems involving purchases and the calculation of change to the nearest five cents with and without digital technologies
Multiplication and Division - Focus on identifying factors and multiples and using mental strategies to solve equations. Look at the inverse operations of multiplication and division
Fractions and Decimals
This unit will focus on iIdentifying equivalent fractions, ordering fractions on a numberline and identifying fractional parts of groups.
Students will also look at different types of fractions and convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers.
The children will also be introduced to decimal fractions in tenths and hundredths and the interrelationship between both fractional groups
Measurement & Geometry
3Dimensional Shapes
Students will learn to identify, draw and describe properties of 3D shapes.
Volume, Mass and Capacity
Students will use scaled instruments to measure and compare masses and capacities
Students will also measure volume by comparing objects using familiar metric measurements.
Inquiry
From Sunlight to Moonlight
In this Learning Unit students will develop an understanding of the difference between day and night. Students will learn that different cultures have different stories about creation. They will develop their understanding on how the Earth's rotation on its axis causes regular changes, including night and day.
Changing Landscapes
In this Learning Unit the students will investigate how the Earth’s surface changes over time as a result of natural processes and human activity..
Religion
Creativity
Students will learn to recognise and understand that our Catholic faith has a yearly cycle. They will learn to identify and list components in the liturgical calendar year that are celebrated.
Students will also learn that the Sacrament of Reconciliation is part of our faith journey, and understand the elements and aspects of the Reconciliation Sacrament.
Students will also learn more about the season of advent and our Christmas traditions.
Social Emotional Wellbeing
Problem Solving Strategies
This term we will focus on helping students learn a range of problem-solving skills through applied learning tasks so they are able to cope with the challenges they face in the future. To be able to solve problems, children need to be able to think critically and evaluate the consequences of various actions.
