Teaching and Learning

Welcome To Our New Reception Students

Welcome to our new reception students and their families. Everyone has had a fun first week at West Beach Primary School.

The students have been learning many new skills and activities while getting to know their teachers.

Here are some photos of the students in Rooms 1,2 and 3 enjoying different activities around our school. These include our Introception Program, Spelling Lesson, Reading Stories, PE and Science plus many others.

Japanese

Konnichiwa and welcome to Nihongo for 2020– the year of the mouse/rat!

By now all the children have had a chance to visit the Japanese Room and begin their lessons for the year.

We have been busy talking about New Year in Japan and the story of The Zodiac. Can your child tell you how the story goes?

Sports News

Hello West Beach Families,

My name is Marley Reid, and I am the Physical Education teacher here at West Beach Primary School. I am writing to you so as to formally introduce myself and briefly let you know about what I’ll be teaching your child/ren this term.

This is my second year at West Beach Primary teaching PE. I loved getting the opportunity to teach your children in 2019 and am looking forward to it again in 2020.

I am a big basketball and football fan, so you may see me wearing some Port Adelaide on Mondays after a win on the weekend. I play basketball for South Adelaide Panthers and football for PHOS Camden. Term 1 is jam packed as always with a plenty of exciting opportunities for students to participate in a variety of sporting experiences. We have coaches from Rugby SA, Badminton SA, Adelaide Crows women, Henley Beach Tennis and Lacrosse SA coming to West Beach this term to deliver programs to students outside of their PE lessons. In addition to this, middle and upper primary students will have the opportunity to trial for our upcoming district Swimming, Lacrosse, Rugby and Badminton carnivals.

Attached to this letter is a Term 1 overview for students from Reception to Year 7. We are extremely lucky to have a pool at West Beach and I would really love to be able to utilise it in conjunction with some nice weather. Students will be able to develop the fundamental skills of Water Polo and Water Volleyball in these lessons.

Feel free to contact me at Marley.Reid81@schools.sa.edu.au if you ever have any questions.

Kind regards,

Marley Reid

PE Teacher/Coordinator

Hello!

My name is Tina Mouzakitis and I am very pleased and grateful to be the Wellbeing Coordinator at West Beach Primary School.

At West Beach Primary School all staff believe that being proactive about supporting and promoting mental health and wellbeing in our students is vital in today’s world and the world of the future. Life has its ups and downs and …. students who are socially and emotionally competent, are better able to navigate through these times with a positive attitude and optimism, therefore feeling happier more often.

All staff at West Beach Primary School are dedicated to working together and building a positive community based on respectful relationships and a sense of belonging and inclusion … and as the Wellbeing Coordinator at West Beach Primary School I enjoy working closely with staff and students on wellbeing initiatives. Our school’s strong focus on Positive Education supports our aim - to provide daily opportunities for our students to live each day to the fullest and to flourish.

Research shows that students who flourish in all aspects of their life regularly experience positive emotions, feel engaged in what they are doing, develop and enjoy positive relationships with others, find deeper meaning in their lives and strive to achieve.

At West Beach Primary School, we use The Australian Student Wellbeing Framework to support all students and their families through a systemic whole school approach to wellbeing, with tiers of support that emphasise appropriate early intervention.

Programmes and courses taught are:

The Australian Student Wellbeing Framework

Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum

Positive Education and Growth Mindset

Growing with Gratitude

Restorative Practice

Bounce Back (Resilience and social emotional learning)

Interoception Program (Interoception is a pre‐requisite skill for self‐management and self‐regulation. It provides the tools to know when we are developing emotional reactions and the skills to be in control of those reactions.)

When we partner closely with families and the community we are best positioned to support children's wellbeing. Your thoughts, perspectives and feedback are always welcome and we encourage you to get in touch with us if you’d like to talk about our wellbeing priorities.

I’m available to meet with parents and caregivers on Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays and Fridays. You can get in touch with me by phoning the Front Office on 83567930 or emailing Tina.Mouzakitis552@schools.sa.edu.au. Our Pastoral Care Worker, Cathy Turner, is available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
