Drugs & The Adolescent

Year 10 DARE

Students from Year 10 Drugs and the Adolescent class took part in an excursion to GV Health on Tuesday 30th August to participate in the DARE Program (Drugs Adolescent Risk Education).

The students were led by an Emergency Department Nurse, Tunya Jarvis through what happens when a person makes a bad choice, perhaps drives a car too fast, drinks and drives or uses drugs and alcohol.

Students were educated on different types of risks and their consequences. They were guided through the Emergency Department and were able to see doctors and nurses in action as well as take part in a mock trauma and saw the high pressure and high impact situations that happen everyday as a result of poor choices.

To finish students participated in a rehab session where they played the role of a person who had been injured and had to wear the splints, neck braces, try to communicate with others when unable to talk, and try to eat with a broken jaw.

Feedback from students has been very positive and this was a great learning experience.

Shepparton High School hopes to run the DARE Program each year for the Drugs and the Adolescent unit.
