Year 8 Girl and Boy Day

Cohort Development Day
Thursday 23 May 2019 was cohort development day for the Year 8’s. The boys headed over to the Moama Cricket Rooms and the girls out to Cadell on the Murray. Here we spent the day learning about different issues that may arise during our adolescence such as bullying, careers, outlook, choices and friends.
Cath and Kelly (The Giddy Aunts) were a real treat for the girls, starting the seminar with a bit of acting and how girls can bully each other. They introduced FRA (Female Relationship Aggression) to us and acted out how FRA can look and feel toward girls. We learnt that things as simple as eye rolls and turning your back is a sign of FRA and can hurt somebody a lot. Cath and Kelly taught us how to cope with bullying and to avoid it. They also showed us how to access kidshelpline.com and how going to a trusted adult to talk to about what you’re going through can help.
“Just be kind to everyone" was their inspiring message. We had a delicious BBQ cooked by Miss Bennett and Mrs Pinson for lunch, and got to sit outside overlooking the river to eat and enjoy the location. Our final activity was to make little glitter jars full of water, to add some sparkle and to remind us that when we shake it we slowly watch the glitter float from the surface to the bottom of the jar, to take a pause before reacting to something we don’t like/agree with. After a long day of learning new things and recapping over the realities of life, we had 10 minutes to sit down and self-reflect by meditating.
The boys started the day by walking over to the Moama Cricket Ground to participate in this great day. When we got there, Nathan, Dave and Jake greeted us all. They introduced themselves and then we got cracking. The first game we played was for a twenty-dollar iTunes gift card! Everyone had to get in the crab walk position, and then try stealing people’s socks. The person who kept their socks on for the longest was the winner. Scott was our winner!
Nathan then got us all on the couches and told us a story. It was about how life is like a game of cards, you could be drawn a good deck , an ok deck or a bad deck .
After that chat we got in 3 groups and made a tribe. We played some group games and team building activities such as shoe towers, balloon towers and life size naughts and crosses.
Nathan shared some more personal stories about life and awarded the last gift cards, one to William and the other to Nate.
Overall the Moama Anglican Grammar Year 8 boys had a great day and learnt lots of great life skills and lessons.
