Brain Dissection for Unit 1 Psychology

The Year 11 Psychology class dissected lamb brains to gain a greater understanding on the different parts and lobes of the brain. Each student was paired with a partner for the dissection, and students were required to identitfy the different lobes of the brain: the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, temperal lobe etc. They labelled the parts by placing paper next to them and took pictures with their devices.

The dissection was not only extremely insightful, but it also allowed students to develop a more elaborate understanding of the brain.

Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology this term has concentrated on investigating how properties can change as we move to the nanoscale while developing skills in experimental design and technique. We have explored the effect of increasing surface area through demonstrations including a fireball of flammable liquid as well as practical work. Students discovered and measured the unusual properties of shape memory alloys that revert to their original shape when heated. The term was rounded out with the challenge to recreate the hydrophobic properties of magic sand using regular sand, cooking oil and candle wax.
