Year 8

Year 8 News
Term 3 has been an action-packed term in Year 8 from competitive sport to performing in bands and productions. Many students have represented the College in ACC Hockey, Basketball and Table Tennis. Whilst hockey lost all of their away games, they were victorious in their home games with their best game being a 4 - 1 win. Table Tennis has had an impressive season so far, only losing one game and getting to the finals. Our basketball team has tried their best and have taken 2 games home this season. However, it hasn't all been about sport in Term 3. A group of Year 8’s won the Battle of the Bands - special mention to Spencer O'Leary, Benjamin Erbacher and Joe DeFrancesco. In addition, Martin Haycroft, Gus Mooney and Nicholas Gale performed in our recent musical 'Guys and Dolls' and have dedicated countless hours over the last few months in rehearsal time.

At the start of the semester, all of Year 8 were brought into the auditorium to be informed about the subject selection process for Year 9. The energy in the room was palpable as all the boys were extremely eager to pick their subjects.
You could definitely sense the excitement being in that room. There was a wide selection of subjects to consider including electives in multimedia, business, music and game design.
A more recent occasion that the Year 8s experienced was a visit by the author Gerard Bauer. He spoke about the creative writing process of books and stories. An idea could come to him from an unfortunate autocorrect accident to simply observing a billboard that had an appealing name on it while walking.
Just recently, each Homeroom selected their best public speaker to represent them in the Inter-Class Public Speaking Competition. Each speaker presented a 3 minute prepared speech followed by a 60 second impromptu speech in front of the entire year level. It was a display of hard work and skill that both opened our eyes and gave us a much deeper understanding of the topics covered. In the end, the winners were Liam Turner (8.5) and Nicholas Gale (8.6).
Congratulations to them on their hard work and excellent oratory skills. They both had advanced to the Br. Quentin O'Halloran Public Speaking Competition which will include the year level winners of Year 7 to 12. Good luck to them!
All of this is a small sample of the activities that take place at St Bede’s on a regular basis. Term 3 has been busy and full of excitement, and I'm sure Term 4 will be even greater.
