Periods 1 and 2
History-Clash of the Superpowers
One day after the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, one of the most significant battles of the Vietnam War, Year 10 History students attended an incursion conducted by the Vietnam Veterans Education Unit.
Rob and Jim spoke about their experiences and those of the Australian men and women who were involved in Australia’s longest war.
Some of the topics discussed included the differences between Australian and American servicemen and their fields of operation, the veteran’s respect for the North Vietnamese Army, the Viet Cong and the tactics they employed throughout the war and the results of the war, including Rob’s and Jim’s PTSD and how their experiences of war have shaped them.
Students were incredibly attentive and asked the vets some wonderful questions. As usual, they were a credit to Lilydale High School.
Student comments:
“It was amazing how much weight they had to carry and how small the tunnels were.”
“I thought it was incredible to talk to someone who was actually there. I feel angry that civilians in the 60s treated veterans so badly when they had no idea what the soldiers were actually doing.”
“I learnt so much. Thank you! I felt really sad about families disowning their sons that fought in the war. Getting put through the fear and stress show so much bravery. Well done. I feel very privileged to have experienced your stories.”
“Today was quite full on actually. When you learn what a soldier actually went through day in and day out and how dangerous it was; it is quite eye opening.”
“I can’t believe or imagine the hardships you survived, and how you dealt with things after and throughout the war. You should be thanked for protecting our country and you should have every right to feel proud. Thank you for telling me your stories today, and I highly admire you for what you did for our country.”
“It’s amazing to hear first-hand accounts of the war. I am stunned by what soldiers had to experience, and the recounts had a larger effect on me than just reading about it.”
“I didn’t know they were treated so badly when they came back.”
“You are an inspiration to us all.”
“I now have a greater understanding of the war thanks to these wonderful blokes.”
