MATHS

7.37 Maths

On Monday 29 August, we visited 7.37 to see what they have been working on.  Below are student responses;

Jasmena Kavanagh

"My problem is Crossing the River 1. We are trying to figure out how many trips it will take for any number of adults and two children to cross the river. We had to use our knowledge of algebra to work out the rule for our problem, so that we could graph it by hand and using Google Sheets."

Jessica Carden

"I'm working on Square Numbers.  I need to draw a picture that proves the Mathematics that I'm working on. When I am done, I am going to determine some coordinates that I have gathered from creating an equation and put them onto a graph."

Emma Smith

 "I have been learning about the distributive law and looking for patterns to make it easier to do in my head. I have then learnt how to factorise quadratics so that I can substitute and create a graph."

Mackenzie Coakley

"I have been learning to expand and factorise quadratics and sketch the graphs of non-linear equations. We will be presenting our work on a website for everyone to see."

Tayla McDonald

"My problem was Smooth Edge Tiles. We had to figure out how many of each type of tile was required to build a patio. We had to create an algebraic rule and we had to explain our working. We then put all of our work up onto a Google site to show people what we have done."

Numeracy Week

Throughout this week, Lilydale High School has been celebrating Numeracy Week in a big way!

To promote numeracy within the school we have held a number of activities;

  • Jelly beans - Guess the number ofjelly beans in the jar (at the Administration Office).
  • Mathopoly - A numeracy inspired game of Monopoly where students answer questions to receive coins.
  • Giant Chess - A number of students took part in both a game of 'Giant Chess' in the Middle School Quadrangle, as well as regular sized chess off to the side.
  • Live beat the teacher - An opportunity for students to battle one-on-one in a game of Mathematical wit to try and beat their teachers.
  • Catch an idea - Students were encouraged to find examples of Mathematics in the real world and email it through to Ms Kaspar for their chance to win a prize.

A huge thank you to the teachers and students who got involved with the activities throughout the week.  A special thank you to Ms Kaspar for putting it all together! Without all of your participation, it would not have been the huge success that it was!
