Room 5a
This fortnight in Room 5A we had a special visitor who taught us about the didgeridoo. He shared a story with us and told us how they are made. The children in Room 5A made their own dinosaur fossils out of salt dough. We then wrote a procedure on how salt dough was made. We also had the opportunity to listen to Mr Mycko’s book (The Olympics are coming). He shared with us how he drew the illustrations and the process of making the book. All the children in Room 5A dressed up for book week parade. They did a great job and there costumes were amazing.
Going for Gold in Room 14
We have been learning about Measurement and comparing size and length using informal units. To connect our learning to real life events, we researched the Olympics, created our own passports and travelled all the way to Rio to conduct our own Cotton Ball Olympics! We used our feet to measure and record how far we could throw, flick, blow, kick and roll a cotton ball. As an extension, we are now going to represent this data on a class chart to compare and comment on the results.
The outdoor, hands-on experience heightened the student’s engagement as they continue to extend their measurement vocabulary and understanding.
Room 26
Last week, Book Week was celebrated by our school. Each class was involved in Book Week activities by reading a book, creating an art piece and discussing our opinions on the book. Room 26 read a book called ‘Suri’s Wall’. The book is about whether to shield children form the evils of the world or tell them about it. We created an art piece that represented how we were peering through the wall and seeing what Suri’s imagination saw. As well as this, we had to answer questions about whether Suri was right about protecting the children from the war beyond the wall.
We also used Book Week to interact with younger students of the school. With our reception buddies, we chose our favourite books to read to them. We helped them find new books in our library for them to read.
We displayed our art work in the resource centre. We did this by putting flaps over our work for anyone to open and peer through.
Room 32
In Room 32 we were all excited to learn about the Olympic Games.
Amelie brought in her grandmother’s uniform from when she competed in the Olympic Games. Dianne Burge sprinted for Australia in the 1964 and 1968 Olympic Games. We tried on her clothes and held an Olympic torch that was used in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Torch Relay.
We were also lucky to have Tania Hill (Modra),( Caleb’s mum) a double gold medallist at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics come and visit us. She spoke to us about her experiences in cycling and showed us her gold medals. She even let us wear them.
Room 4
Every Tuesday, Room 4 spends the afternoon playing in the playroom. The children role-play and become shop keepers, Mums and Dads, puppet show performers and much more. The children also make train tracks and create small words with animals. Play allows children to develop their social and emotional skills by: interacting with others, sharing and cooperating, and understanding and responding to others’ feelings. The children always have a great time in the playroom!
Room 33 News
We are busy being scientists and mathematicians in Room 33.
We are thinking like scientists by questioning "why" and then trailing "how". We are learning about friction, experimenting, making ramps and applying what we know to our own constructions. We are also learning about famous scientists and locating information about what they invented and how this has helped us.
We are halving and doubling in maths as well as making thirds, quarters and fifths.
We made the Olympic wall to celebrate golden moments. We designed our own class mascots. In literacy, we researched the Olympics and have written our own non- fiction books.
Book Week and buddies Rooms 17 and 30
Rooms 17 and 30 are buddies this year. We meet every Wednesday in either classroom and work together on creative play, sports, craft and Literacy.
These past few weeks to celebrate book week, we looked at the book ‘The Olympics are Coming’ written by Graham Mycko. We used his idea of animals playing a sport and with our buddies we drew our own pages for our buddies booklet.

Rumah-rumah Indonesia
The Middle School students are learning about different types of housing in Indonesia and about the reasons for various features such as stilts, high pitched rooves or large verandas.
They are also labelling rooms and areas of their houses in Bahasa Indonesia and reading and translating paragraphs from Bahasa Indonesia to English.
We use a variety of interactive whiteboard activities to reinforce and practise new vocab that is being learnt.
The following photos are of mini research posters that show various types of Indonesian housing.
