Ayla has just won the Nationwide Staedtler Art Competition in the junior section.
This meant that she has been awarded $1000 prize money.
This Competition was open to all Year 7 to Year 12 students, and an opportunity for all up and coming artists to share their work for the chance to win one of 9 prizes. This year Staedtler had a panel of 3 talented judges, and they were looking for the STAEDTLER Senior (Years 10-12) and Junior (Years 7-9) Artist of the Year 2021. Both first place winners received $1,000.
We are all very excited and thrilled for Ayla.
What an amazing achievement and her drawing is absolutely stunning!
Melbourne University STEM Program
Congratulations to Cherie L, Y11 who has been involved with STEM Program since Y9.
In 2019, I was accepted into Melbourne University’s ‘Girl Power in Engineering’ program. The program goes from Year 9-12, and includes staying at Melbourne Uni for 3 nights, work experience in Year 10 and a university student mentor for Years 11 and 12.
Here is a bit about my mentor:
“Name: Natalie Muljoatmodjo
University: University of Melbourne
Studies: Master of Civil Engineering
High School: Doncaster Secondary College, Doncaster, Melbourne
Subjects I did at school: Math Methods, Math Specialist, Physics, Visual Communication and Design, English, Indonesian Second Language
What I study in university:
I completed my undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Design) at the University of Melbourne, and I'm currently studying my Masters degree in Civil Engineering at the same University. During my time in university, I've had the opportunity to work on some really great projects, such as designing a bridge, a building, a drinking water system, a dam, and so much more. I've even had the opportunity to work on a lot of other subjects and projects that aren't related to civil engineering - such as law, property, architecture, and more. I enjoy being able to explore a lot of different subjects and areas, which is a great feature of the University of Melbourne structure.
Why did I become a mentor?
Looking back at my high school and undergraduate years, I wished I had someone like a mentor, or someone who had been in university to talk to. As a student in high school, the process of applying to university, the options, and the different programs available was certainly overwhelming, and having someone to help me navigate my options would have helped a lot. Additionally, I had no idea what to expect from university, and what kind of opportunities were available as a First Year. Thus, as someone who experienced that, I would like to help out as much as I can and provide insight to help people feel more comfortable and supported.”
The camp in Year 9 opened my eyes to the possibilities of a career in engineering or physics, those are still the areas I am currently interested in studying at university. While my work experience was unfortunately cancelled last year due to COVID, I was going to be spending a week at the Bio21 research institute in Melbourne which would have been a dream come true. I was offered a wide variety of choices when applying for work experience, from computer science to geology.
The program has definitely helped me broaden my interest and knowledge in the STEM field, I would highly recommend any Year 9 girls interested in STEM to apply.
