Icarus Community Report

Issue 11

A message from the 5/6 Icarus teachers

We are so proud of the resilience shown by our grade 5 and 6 students in adapting again to online learning. They were great role models for the rest of our school community who are impressed by their flexibility. Thank you parents and guardians for your help ensuring a smooth transition to online learning and back to face-to-face school again.

5/6 Excursion to VSSEC

We are feeling incredibly fortunate that the grade 5/6s managed to go on their excursion to the Victorian Space Science Education Centre just before we had to transition back to online learning. Overwhelmingly, the feedback from students was positive. They enjoyed the activities on offer:

  • using algorithms to code Sphero robots to move around a Mars landscape
  • wearing space jumpsuits and conducting science experiments on a Mars base
  • acting as Mission Control and communicating with their classmates using computers

The excursion was the perfect start to our Inquiry focus on space. Have a look at some of the incredible photos below ....

"What my team did in the earth room (Mission control) was sit in front of computers and make sure that the astronauts were okay on Mars! It was so much fun because I got to wear a headset and I got to talk to the astronauts (my classmates) and we got to wear the super cute, super stylish, blue onesie (astronaut suit). We looked hilarious in it! We all looked like blue Oompa Loompas!" - Salam, Grade 6

Letter writing to preps for 100 days of school

As the oldest students in the school, our grade 5/6s have been busy writing letters to the preps, congratulating them on completing 100 days of learning in their first year of school. Students gave advice and reminded preps why coming to school every day was important. Our students take their responsibility as role models seriously and the wonderful letters they produced reflect that.

Online learning

As teachers, we are always so impressed by the quality of work our students produce. This is especially impressive when they are learning from home. Look at some of these fantastic pizzas that students made to illustrate fractions (parts of a whole). Another activity they did was creating a pie graph to show how their day could be broken into smaller fractions of daily tasks they completed.

Our learning focus

Our learning areas at the moment:

Mathematics: fractions and decimals (including money)

Reading: learning to paraphrase information (put it in our own words so we are not plagiarising)

Writing: learning to write an Information Report.

Please ensure you are monitoring Compass notifications so you are aware of upcoming dates (Wear PJs to school day, Olympics dress up day, Athletics day, Swimming, Life Education program, etc.)

Kind regards,

5/6 Icarus teachers,
