Artist Spotlight & AHPS Art Competition!

Our Visual Arts Captains have sought out special talent within the school community for our 2nd A.H.P.S Visual Art Competition. This competition was design by a talented student from Icarus named Taren. Taren is a Year 5 student who enjoys drawing and designing buildings. He dreams of one day becoming an architect. You may have noticed one of his drawings in our last art competition.

For this competition, Taren created a colouring page that students were encouraged to creatively complete with colour and their own designs. Taren, alongside our art captains, Ebony and Gracie, examined all the entries and choose the best! They had a hard time choosing the winners, but congratulations to the following students:

Reconciliation Week!

Across the school, we celebrated Reconciliation Week during Remote learning by creating the Aboriginal Flag out of materials we could find around the home. It was great to see so much variation in our flags by being creative with materials. There were rocks, Lego, toys, paints, colours, flowers, containers, fruit; you name it, and I think somebody probably used it! It was amazing to see so many students acknowledging the meaning behind the flag as well.

Checkout these flags from Zaineb and Salam, who both included an ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ in the middle of their flag design! Impressive!

Achilles – Foundation

During remote learning, Achilles continued to explore texture, hunting around their home for different materials with a bumpy surface. They placed these materials underneath paper and coloured on top see see what kinds of patterns and textures they could create. Students were encouraged to create an image of their choice and to colour the image with the different textures they discovered.

Achilles then enjoyed ending the term experimenting with the magic of 'Scratch Paper'! They read the story 'Tiny T-Rex and the Impossible Hug', before scratching patterns onto their own dinosaur. Students then developed a landscape with markers and oil pastels to complement their scratch dinosaur.

Xenica & Argus – Year 1/2s

Argus and Xenica continued on with their acrylic and oil pastel piece. They applied their practiced drawing using oil pastels, onto their painted background. Students experienced the different feeling of drawing over a textured surface. The acrylic paint had formed a raised bumpy surface, that most students found fun to colour over! They learnt to firmly apply the pastel and outline their work with black, to give it contrast from the background. Their pictures looked bold and colourful, which you can enjoy below!

Ulysses – Year 3/4s

During remote learning, Ulysses and Icarus explored graffiti art. They completed a Kahoot, asking them to reflect on 'What is damage and what is art' when it comes to street art. All students that participated were sensible in deciding the difference between the two and it was interesting to see what their overall favourite artworks were. They then combined technology with art to experiment with font styles to create their own graffiti tag. After completing a digital version with a font generator, they were encouraged to draw their own version in their books or on paper. The results were impressive!

To finish the term, Ulysses have continued on with their steampunk sculptures, adding the finer details and beginning to work on the final step; painting! They first painted a base layer using acrylic paints in the colours black or brown. Following on from this, they will add dabs of metallic colours in bronze or gold to give their work the appearance of being old and rustic. Some students have begun these final steps, but Ulysses sculptures will not be completed until we return in Term 3! I know that they are all looking forward to the final piece and have enjoyed using their imaginations describing the purpose of their sculptures and all their functions!

Icarus – Year 5/6s

Icarus have finished the term working on their sewing projects. Their plushies are starting to take form and they are showing patience and care stitching them together. Knots have been the biggest challenge and passing the thread through the eye of the needle! Once these challenges have been overcome, Icarus have flown through the sewing aspect of their art.
