From the Senior Sports Master

As the term comes to a conclusion I thank you all for the support you have shown for your son's Winter sport in what has been a cold Term 2.

We are now at the half way mark of the Winter season with games recommencing in the first Saturday of Term 3 (Saturday 17 July).

Over the break our Opens Rugby 1st XV are heading up to Queensland to play fellow EREA schools, Nudgee College and St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace, and we wish them well with this tour.

Can I also draw your attention to the SPX Football Holiday Camp at Oxford Falls being organised by Richard Lacey and his coaching team. Please support this venture.  It is there for your son's football development and provides a good stop-gap in what is a long break between ISA matches (details in the Football section).

Oliver Aylmer, Tom Marren and Zac Flynn will play for the ISA Under 16s side over the weekend.

Congratulations also goes to all the St Pius X Players who played for their respective club sides over the June Long Weekend at the state champs.

Orange Weekend Away – 17 July 2021

St Pius X College travel to Kinross Wolaroi School on Saturday 17 July. Traditionally, many families use this as a weekend to getaway and to that end, the Rugby Supporters Club have organised dinner on the Friday night at the Lord Anson and put rooms on hold at the Mercure Hotel.

You can book directly with the Hotel on 02-63625611 and mention that you are part of the St Pius X College Chatswood Rugby Club booking for Friday 16th July.

If you were interested in staying at the Mercure Hotel we recommend you book in ASAP as we only have a limited number of rooms put on ‘hold’ – (obviously there are other accommodation venues in Orange that you may prefer to stay at, though as Orange is a major regional centre, accommodation can book out well in advance of events).

A bus will be available for those students who cannot make their own way to Orange which will depart Anderson Street Chatswood at 6:15 am and return at the conclusion of the 1st XV match. Students will be asked to sign up to get the bus with the coaches over the coming weeks.

Rugby Supporters' Club Committee Fundraising Events

The St Pius X Rugby Supporters' Club raise funds that go directly back into the Rugby program. In previous years, the Supporters' Club has provided significant funds for external coaching, rugby specific physio, tour contributions, tour clothing and kit etc.

Last year due to COVID-19, fundraising was put on hold, meaning the club is desperate to re-coup funds to contribute again during the 2021 season.

At the last Rugby Committee meeting, it was agreed that the three fundraising focuses this season would be a Monster Raffle, the Rugby Club Dinner (on Friday 30 July) and the Golf Day, held later in the year.

The success of these events relies on the support of everyone in the Rugby Community. Please support the events above through your attendance and through selling raffle tickets when they become available.

Another way you could help is by reaching out to your known contacts to donate prizes for the raffle and Rugby dinner. In the past, prizes have included accommodation in venues like Noosa and the Hunter Valley, services like photography sessions provided, not to mention memorabilia, tickets to events, toys or sporting gear for children, money can’t buy experiences with celebrities or adrenaline based activities to name a few. The rugby supporters committee is asking the community to come together and consider how they, or someone they know could donate to these events.

Please contact myself: JLynch@stpiusx.nsw.edu.au or Rugby Club President Paul O’Neill: paoneill21@gmail.com if you can contribute in any way.

CSDA Debating Competition

Elimination 1, Wednesday 16 June

Tonight the 12B team (5 wins from 6) will debate Caroline Chisolm College at Oakhill College, Castle Hill. Our thoughts are with you all 😊.

Elimination 2, Friday 18 June

This Finals draw was emailed to me on Monday night.  The 11B team (6 from 6 wins) are now straight through to the Quarter finals, which will be hosted by St Pius X College in Week 1 of Term 3.  This is terrific as the instruction to me last Tuesday was that this team would need to debate in the Elimination round. Monday’s draw sees them through to the Quarters. This alteration is normal when the results are consolidated. It is always tricky leading into the Elimination series until all the information is received and consolidated.

I was hoping that something similar may have worked out for the 7A team.  This amazing group of young men won 5 from 6 debates but have not moved through to Eliminations because there are eight 7A teams who have won 6 from 6 debates which means that those teams will make up the Quarter Final competition. This is unfortunate, but…the luck of the draw…and we will acknowledge our amazing Year 7’s at Assembly next term.

TERM 3

Quarter Final, Friday 16 July – hosted by St Pius X College.

Semi Final, Friday 23 July

Grand Final, Friday 30 July

Cross-Country

Seven of our Senior Students recently represented ISA at the CIS Cross-Country.

Riley Watt ran strongly in the U14’s finishing 13th and narrowly missing a spot in the team. Jacob Magner and Quinton Crispe ran in the U15’s. Jacob finished 9th and moves forward now as a CIS representative for the State Cross-Country, whilst Quinton finished mid-field. Josh Brown and Simon Magner were both selected in the U17 6km race. Unfortunately Simon had to withdraw due to injury, leaving Josh to fly the flag and finish mid-field in the tough conditions. In the Opens, Matt North continued his stellar form to finish 10th and qualify for State. Ben Ferguson, called into the squad late after a withdrawal, ran a very commendable 20th.

A huge congratulations to all boys for representing SPX and ISA with distinction. We wish Jacob and Matt the best for State.

Mr Greg Virgona - Cross-Country Convenor
