Big Sky Thinking
This year in Big Sky Thinking students will be embarking on a project surrounding the theme of 'Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle and Regenerate'. The students will develop a project around this theme and present it at the EXPO in Term 4. To kick things off the students investigated two days’ worth of waste from the playground bins and sorted it into categories. The students found that our school uses a lot of soft plastics, which accounted for a substantial part of our waste followed by paper towel. It was a terrific opportunity to reflect on what we are throwing out that ends up in landfill and what we are recycling.
They concluded we have a lot of work to do to improve our footprint and reduce landfill waste. They are looking forward to developing their project over the year and presenting it to you in Term 4.

Infants
A huge welcome back to our wonderful school for 2023! Everyone – students and staff – were all excited to catch up with each other and are all happily back into the swing of school life. Our back-to-school week was made all the more fun with our Swimming Carnival last Friday – so fantastic to see such great swimming and effort by our students, all having a wonderful time and getting into the spirit despite shivering away! Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and friends who were able to join us to watch, cheer and help out on the day.
In the coming fortnight, we welcome all families to our ‘Welcome BBQ’ on Wednesday 22 February, kicking off at 5:30pm. Before this BBQ, all families are invited to attend a ‘Meet and Greet’ with teachers. This will be a chance to meet Infants and Primary staff, and to find out more about the day-to-day routines and expectations of school, to ask questions and chat with other families. We hope many of you are able to join us in the Infants Building, from 4:15pm and the Primary Building from 4:45pm, and then join us for a sausage sandwich and some cricket!
Boorowa Central School has a number of new students in our Infants Department this year, and we warmly welcome them to our wonderful school community. We are also lucky to have many new staff members joining our team this year. In Infants we have welcomed Miss Emily Friend as the Year 1/2 class teacher, Mrs Lauren Crockett as our new Librarian, as well as Miss Amy Green and Miss Maddi Pearsall.

Kindergarten
Congratulations to all Kindergarten students (and their families) for successfully navigating their first week at school. It was fantastic to see our large group of students looking so very grown up in their uniforms and ready to start the big and exciting next step of learning at school. They are all quickly becoming familiar with the routines and expectations of school, and they should be super proud of themselves.
A big thank you to each Year 6 buddy for playing a big part in this success – they have been helping their young buddies during lunch and recess breaks, playing with them, and guiding them in the playground. These relationships between our students are one of the things that makes our school so great!
Our Kindergarten students have hit the ground running and are already learning sounds and skills to help them with reading and writing as well as showing off what clever mathematicians they are. We are all looking forward to having our first STEM lesson with Mrs Bridge this week as well as cooking with Ms Armour – what an impressive start to big school!

Class 1/2
Hello everyone and welcome to Year 1 and 2! Over the last week in 1/2, we have been settling into our space. This has included developing our collaborative classroom agreements - of which each student has taken ownership of signing their agreement on the poster. We have developed our routines for throughout the school day such as how we come into the classroom and where our belongings go- I have certainly been learning the whole school routines too! We now have classroom ‘jobs’ where each student will have a turn at taking responsibility for a specific job for a whole week. This has been a lot of fun as far as students have been reminding each other of their roles and taking responsibility for a tidy and well-functioning workspace. Students were able to meet their teachers for science, geography, STEM and library and they seem to love seeing the numerous faces throughout each school day 😊.

Primary
Welcome back to all staff, students and families to the 2023 academic year in Primary. We are happy to meet some new students and families and we hope your journey here at Boorowa Central School will be a fantastic experience. We welcome new staff Amy Green (RFF Teacher), Maddi Pearsall (RFF Teacher), Emily Friend (1/2 Class) and Lauren Hewett (Crokett) (Librarian) and we are already seeing their positive influence throughout the school. Returning staff are Mem Brougham (Kindergarten), Natalie Downey (2/3 Class), Matthew Rowley (4/5 Class), Sue Dwyer (Yindy) and I’ll continue teaching the mighty 5/6 class. Denise Corkhill stays our Learning and Support Teacher, Carol Harpley will continue with structured interventions across English and mathematics, and Mary Corkhill keeps everything organised and together in her Administration role. Combine that with our ‘best in the business’ support staff and SLSOs, and we are set for another wonderful year here at Boorowa Central School.
We had a great first few days at school getting into routines, meeting new friends, creating art displays for the walls and even having our swimming carnival on Friday. Congratulations to the students who ended up Champions and Runner-Up on the day (please see the Sport page of this issue for details).
The District PSSA Swimming Carnival in Cowra is on Wednesday 1 March 2023 – the team will be selected and notes to go out soon.
I would like to welcome all families to our Parent Information Session on Wednesday 22 February 2023. The first session is at 4:15 pm for all Infants families in the Infants building, and the 2nd session is 4:45 pm for all Primary families in the Primary building. These sessions will be a fantastic way to meet all of our staff, find out our routines, important dates, classroom expectations, ways to communicate and much more. Please join us at the sessions and then we will head to the Boorowa Central School Welcome BBQ straight after.

5/6 Classroom
We have had a highly creative start to the term in the 5/6 classroom. We are currently working on abstract art to create nameplates and 2D shapes to decorate our classroom. In English we are focusing on the text called ‘The Day She Stole The Sun’ by Cobargo Public School, which outlines the experiences of communities on the South Coast who went through terrible bushfires in the summer of 2019 and 2020. In mathematics we are focusing on whole number and the four operations. It has become noticeably clear that all students MUST be reviewing their times tables every single day at home – it is essential knowledge in primary school and essential for success in high school mathematics.
I look forward to a momentous year in our Primary classrooms. See you all at the Parent Information Session on Wednesday
22 February 2023 at 4:45pm here in the Primary classroom.
