NAPLAN Begins
Last week students in Year 3 and Year 5 had the opportunity to undertake practice tests online. This was to familiarise the students with testing conditions and to reduce possible stress and anxiety during the actual tests. The data from the tests enabled teachers to identify how students could best be supported during the actual tests.
On Wednesday our Year 3 and 5 students participated in the first of their assessments the Writing test, where students were asked to write a narrative (story) about the same prompt "The Key". On Thursday, the same students participated in the Reading assessment. Teachers and some parent helpers started off the morning bright and early, by providing the students with a free breakfast, to prepare them for the day ahead.
Next week the students will have the opportunity to complete their Conventions of Language on Monday and Numeracy test on Wednesday. We will also be offering Catch up testing opportunities for any students who have been absent.
I was extremely proud to see the students in all of the classes concentrating and trying their best in such formal testing conditions.
Harmony Day - 21st March
Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Clyde Primary School is celebrating Harmony Day
on Tuesday 21st March. On this day students have been asked to wear either traditional clothing, or orange clothing as orange is the chosen colour for Harmony Day.
On this day, students will participate in a range of activities to promote inclusiveness and belonging. This could include reading stories about families from different cultures, completing art work to signify cultural diversity and participating in cultural games/sports.
Building Update
There has been a lot of action outdoors in recent weeks, including a Year 3-6 playground being built and today the asphalt on our 2 external basketball courts was poured. Fencing and line marking still need to be completed. We are hoping to have these new spaces available to students in the first week of Term 2.
Canteen News
The last day of canteen and lunch orders for Term 1 will be Thursday 6th April and our lunch orders will return for Term 2 on Thursday 27th April.
Bikes and Scooters at School
If your child rides their bike or scooter to school, please remind them that they must walk with their bike/scooter on school grounds. At the school gate, they must get off their
bike/scooter and walk to the Bike Shed (and vice versa when leaving at the end of the school day).
Special Visitors
Last week we had some very special visitors at our school including, an owl, a crocodile, a couple of possums and a kookaburra, just to name a few!
The animals came to our school to enhance the learning done in many of our classrooms. As part of their learning, our Year 3 students are studying biological science and all about the life-cycles of different animals. Our Year 5 and 6 students are learning about animal adaptations and how to classify creatures into the major groups, such as mammals, reptiles, nocturnal, diurnal etc. Please see the photos of this fabulous experience in further pages of this newsletter edition.
We also had a special visit on the same day from our former Clyde PS Princpal, Ms Fiona Pratt. Ms Pratt stopped by to see how the building works were coming along and to catch up with staff and students. We even got her to hold the crocodile!
Elite Athlete Guest Speaker - Students in Years 5 and 6 were given a great opportunity to hear ex Australian Hockey Player Krissy Bates speak today during session 4. She was talking about her story, her journey as a Hockey player, what it’s like to be an elite athlete and more!
Lost Property
Our lost property basket is regularly overflowing with school uniform items, drink bottles, hats and toys. If your child has misplaced an item of clothing, encourage them to come and look in the lost property area, located in the corridor where students access sickbay. Staff do check the basket once a week and return as many items as they can. Make sure that all items of clothing and property that your child brings to school are clearly named (preferably with a first and last name), to ensure they can be identified and returned promptly.
House Cross Country
On Wednesday 8th March, students in Years 3-6 went to Casey Fields to compete in our House Cross Country. Everyone had a great day! The weather was kind to us, the atmosphere was awesome, the teamwork and sportsmanship was just amazing. Well done to everyone that participated and gave it their best. Congratulations to everyone that made the District Cross Country team. It will be held on Wednesday 5th April.
