During their last science lessons for 2022, 7 Red and 7 Silver used specialist glassware for distillation to make perfume from petals. Students collected flowers and leaves along with other items including vanilla essence to mix together trying to create a new perfume. Distillation involves changes of state with evaporation and condensation being key processes.
All of the Year 7 scientists have reduced the freezing point of water by adding salt. The record lowest temperature this year was -21°C which is very cold. Students then used their salt ice baths to make ice cream. Full cream milk and cream from St David’s Dairy, along with some sugar and vanilla essence was mixed changing in 'state' from a liquid to a solid to make delicious ice cream.
