PLT Spotlight ...

Year 3

The Year 3 cohort have had an amazing first few days at school!  The students enjoyed sharing the highlights from their holidays, seeing their new teachers and catching up with their friends.

To begin this term, we are running through our Clyde Communities program to recap on our whole school expectations and values; Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. Then we will begin our first unit of inquiry on living things.  We will look at the features of living and non-living things, life cycles and how living things depend on each other and the environment to survive.

In Reading, students are exploring what it means to be a good reader.  We have been learning about how to choose a “Good Fit Book” and how to choose a good learning spot in the classroom for reading.  Students will also look at their own personal reading preferences and begin exploring why they like certain books or genres.

In Writing, Grade 3 students will be beginning the term with writing narrative and persuasive texts to prepare for NAPLAN.  We will be working on creating well-structured narratives, including a hook to engage the reader and descriptive language to introduce the characters and setting of the story.  They will work on creating a strong stance on persuasive topics to write three arguments and detailed reasons to convince their reader to agree.

Writer’s Notebook sessions will continue this year where the students will practise their skills in writing a range of text types using ideas and storylines that interest them.  The students will work through the writer’s process to draft, publish, edit, revise and publish their best pieces of writing.

In Maths, we have started to explore number, particularly looking at what makes a number odd or even.  Students have been comparing small and larger numbers to decipher if it is either odd or even.  Students have also been looking at transforming shapes and objects. They have been using concrete materials to practice how to flip, rotate, slide and translate in order to make a simple pattern.

It has been fantastic to see all your smiling faces back at school.  We can’t wait to see what this year will bring!
