FOUNDATION

The end is nearly in sight, as we approach the final few days of Foundation 2022. Looking back we have had an amazing year of learning. We have all become self-managerscollaboratorscommunicators and researchers. We have become resilient when faced with new opportunities, learnt many new skills, made friendships and have been a wonderful group of students who have cared about each other and shown kindness towards each other every single day.

Thank you to the parents, grandparents and carers who have supported their children throughout the year. I have really enjoyed meeting all of you. A famous quote states “It takes a village to raise a child” and most definitely you have all been active participants in the FLW village this year.

Thank you to the most amazing group of students, who have given their best every day at school. I feel very privileged that I have had the opportunity to teach and guide every one of you each day at school and to see you blossom. May you always continue to be curious, inquisitive, kind and caring towards others. I look forward to seeing what the future holds in store for all of you. I know great opportunities are waiting for you!

With thanks to Isabel, Oscar, Sam, Adam, Daniel, Elliot, Vivienne, Liam, Alessia, Sascha, Sophie, Sienna, Alessandro, Patrick, Abby, Milana, Damien, Amelia and Zara for a fantastic 2022.

I have included a few photos that have captured the essence of Foundation LW during 2022.

My wish for all of you is to have a restful holiday break and to enjoy Christmas with your families. I look forward to seeing you all next year out on the playground and around the school.

With best wishes,

Leanne Wenckowski

YEAR 1-2

We can’t believe how quickly the year has gone by! This week was another busy one for us in the Junior Learning spaces, with lots of exciting learning opportunities.

As a school, we celebrated Italian Day. Everyone dressed up and we enjoyed pizza and gelato for lunch! We engaged in an incursion where we learnt all about different places in Italy, heard the story of La Befana, and even had time and opportunity to watch Pinocchio. Thank you Signora Rosa for this wonderful day!

As inquirers, we continued to explore our big question ‘What’s Good for Me?’ We inquired into the things we can do to keep healthy, safe and happy. Each Year One and Two class researched an element of physical and emotional well-being to then take further and teach other classes about. 1/2 AP explored the importance of Brain Breaks in learning, 1/2 SC learnt about physical fitness and 1/2 AM inquired into a Buddy Bench to promote being a good friend at school.

As mathematicians, this year we have explored and enhanced our problem-solving skills and critical thinking by engaging in hands-on learning experiences. We have used real-life scenarios to help us learn challenging mathematical concepts, like fractions in cooking and baking and learning about money through experimenting with shop set-ups and creating our own receipts with change. Some of the things we have enjoyed the most about maths this year have been:

  • I have enjoyed going shopping - Ella
  • I loved learning all about time- Elizabeth
  • I loved measuring because it is fun- Orlando
  • I enjoy going outside to learn about maths - Hannah

As we head into our final week of school for 2023, we reflect on the year that was. It is hard to believe that our time together in 1/2 is coming to an end. As a cohort, we have enjoyed so many amazing opportunities, including excursions to Melbourne Zoo, Essendon Traffic School and Scienceworks and incursions from Yarra Valley Water, Life Saving Victoria, St John’s First Aid, Reptile Encounters and even some of our expert parents! We engaged in hands-on learning tasks, design challenges, cooking experiences, science experiments and so much more. We enjoyed exploring how art tells a story, the history of people and places such as Coburg, Saint Fidelis and Indigenous Australians, living things, movement and all about our own health, safety and wellbeing, We learnt many new skills and continued to develop and grow as thinkers, researchers, communicators, collaborators and self-managers.

We thank the parents of 1/2AP, 1/2 AM and 1/2 SC for all of their support, time and effort. We are so thankful for the amazing year we had, and look forward to another year of learning and making new memories in 2023. We wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and holiday break, and a Happy New Year. We also wish Miss Carriera all the best with her wedding in January and her new school for 2023 - you will be missed!

YEAR 3/4

On Monday, the Year 3/4 students went on an excursion to Sandridge Beach hosted by Life Saving Victoria. The students engaged in various activities on the beach and learnt many new things. The students gained knowledge of how to stay safe in and around the water, an emergency response sequence known as DRSABCD, and learnt many rescue and survival strategies. Take a look at our fun day!

On Wednesday, we celebrated Italian day as a whole school. Our day started with a Parade to show our fabulous costumes, then an incursion where we watched an Italian performance. The Year 3/4 students participated in three activities later in the day - A waiter’s Race, a Cooking demonstration hosted by Nonna Paola and interactive puzzles of Italian places. We had the best day!

My favourite part of Italian day was learning the traditional way of making frittole. We learnt from an expert, Nonna Paola. - Alexander 3/4BP

My favourite part of Italian day was participating in the Waiter Race game because we dressed up as a waiter. - Benjamin 3/4BP

My favourite part of Italian day was participating in the Waiter race game. It was a challenge to dribble the ball while holding all of the objects. - Olivia S 3/4KD

My favourite part of Italian day was watching Nonna Paola make the frittole. They were very yummy! - Stella 3/4KD

The year is almost over! Enjoy the last few days.

YEAR 5/6

It’s hard to believe that we are in Week 11 and it is almost the end of the school year. It has been a wonderful year of learning and fun times in the 5/6 level. The students should be very proud of their achievements this year and the manner in which they have shown friendship, empathy and support to one another.

As the year draws to a close, we thought it was the perfect time to reflect on our special memories of the school year. You will notice common themes coming through!

Camp

My favourite memory was going to camp. This is my favourite memory because I was so nervous going and I had such a great time with all of my friends. I loved all of the activities that we did as well. It was also fun seeing how the towns were during the goldrush. One of my other favourite memories is the district athletics since I love to run and my relay team made it quite far and we just missed out on going to the next stage.     Kiara  5/60S

My favourite memory of 2022 5/6cg was at camp when I was in a cabin with Sebastian, Christain X, Luca S, Ethan, Daniel, and a few others in the cabin. But that night we went to this train that took us to a 3D theatre. Then once we went back to the cabins we made up a funny story and we had to come with a follow up from the previous story teller. And Ethan was by far the funniest. Marcus 5/6CG

My favourite memory from 2022 was definitely camp! There were so many fun things that we did at sovereign hill. In our cabin, we were all laughing and having the best time, it was like a sleepover with so many people! We made candles, collected gold from gold panning and went shopping while everyone was obsessed with the raspberry drops. It was the best!  Adelynn 5/6CG

My favourite memory in 2022 was camp, because there were so many different shops to explore and there were so many different activities to do like going down the mines, going to the giant playground, watching the aura light show and more.  Caterina  5/6VC

Year 5/6 Science Expo

My favourite memory of 2022 was the Science Expo, when me, Eve and Olivia sold bubbles and balloons at a stall, and got to make posters. We also got to look at and buy things from the other stalls. It was fun to do a fair test on the 1/2s and make posters showing our results. Everyone had great stalls and our stall, the PsyKids, raised over $200!  Ava P 5/6VC

I loved the science expo. We got to see what people made that contributed to a healthy community. There was sport, food, environmental science and science of the mind. My favourite topics were food science and science of the mind. Christian P   5/6VC

My favourite memories was when the year 5/6 did the science expo, I learnt a lot of new things and I got to work with people I have never worked with. I got to learn more about solar panels. Grace 5/6VC

Sport

My favourite memory was inter school sport because I got to play with my friends and have lots of fun. Tom G (5/6VC)

My favourite memory is getting into the soccer finals for interschool sports and presenting our inquiry in Term 3. Getting into the soccer finals helped me play better and have fun with my friends.  Anthony 5/6CG

My favourite memory from this year was the athletics carnival. It was so fun because I could play sports with all my friends. Sure I didn’t win, but I was cheering on my school and friends until my voice was hoarse. I got 3rd in discus and 6th in the 800 metres. I ate so many lollies but that wasn’t the highlight, the highlight was having the support from my friends as I competed Maya 5/6VC

Friends

My favourite memory was all the memories I have made with my friends over the year and all the times we laughed together. I will miss all of them as we go through to the next stages of our lives in highschool Gisele  5/6OS

My favourite memory is meeting lots of new people and becoming friends with a lot of different people. All of my new friends are super kind and supportive.

Amelia 5/6CG

Other Special Memories

It has been a real privilege to be school captain and my favourite memory of being a leader this year was celebrating the renovation of the junior school building with the Archbishop and local members of government. Chloe 5/6OS

My favourite memory of 2022 was graduation because of the dance circle where everyone kept pushing each other in. I loved the energy of the night and my friends. Sanjay  5/6CG

My favourite memory was the circus. I loved being able to perform on stage and staying up late and talking to my friends. I loved being in the moment. I absolutely loved the balance. This was such a fun night that I will always remember and cherish.  Alana  5/6CG

0ne of my special memories for Year 6 is sharing a Foundation buddy with one of my closest friends. My favourite memory is when we made our ‘No Bullying sash with our buddy. Eva A, Nakita G (5/6OS)

The 5/6 level has certainly had a very busy year! The teachers would like to wish our Year 6 students every success and happiness as they transition to their secondary schools. Thankyou for your wonderful contributions to the St Fidelis community and for being fine role models for the younger students. Congratulations, also, to our Year 5 students and we look forward to seeing all that you will achieve in your final year of Primary schooling. We know that you, too, will make amazing student leaders.

Thank you to the parents and carers for your continued support throughout the year. As always, it has been a privilege to share your child’s learning journey.

Wishing you all a holy and happy Christmas, and a relaxing holiday.

Kind regards,

Viv Clarke, Olivia Sargent, Annette Gasbarro and Michelle Casamento.
