Pre-K to Year 2

The Early Years

As the year begins to draw to a close there is still much learning and fun happening in Learning Spaces in the Early Years at Salvado Catholic College.

In the coming weeks the students will learn about the season of Advent, and the time of prayer and preparation for the celebration of the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. All the classes are busy practising for next week’s Christmas Concert and there is a real buzz of excitement in the air in preparation for this special College event.

Please make sure you are reading all communication sent home in relation to the last two weeks of school and the various events that are planned.

School holidays are a great time to unwind and spend time as a family reconnecting and enjoying one another’s company. It is a great idea to keep the learning going over the break, so below are some ideas for families to practise consolidating Maths skills with their little ones over the Christmas holidays.

Fun with Maths at Home

Math games are the perfect way to reinforce and extend the skills that children learn at school. They are one of the most effective ways that parents can develop their child’s Maths skills in a fun environment.

Here are some suggested activities:

· Play ‘shops’ with items from the kitchen using shopping bags, purses and pretend money.

· Write events on the calendar such as birthdays and special celebrations and talk about these with your children.

· Cook simple things together. Read and talk about recipes. Give your children simple directions to follow.

· Encourage your children to find ingredients in the kitchen and measure them.

· Cut food and talk about size, shape, colour and taste.

·  Count fruit and vegetables as you put them in bags at the shops.

· Talk about the different types of money such as coins, notes and cards and play with making different amounts of money.

There are many ways to play Maths games at home and sometimes all you need is a deck of cards and a dice!
